Chapter Twenty Five

A day after I got put into the boring cage, the dumb humans finally gave me some food. Finally! I was so happy, I gobbled it all in less than a minute. To my annoyance, they didn't replace it.
Flying to my perch, I preened until there wasn't a feather out of place.
I had just closed my eyes, and started sleeping when I heard a scream, "Birdie!!!!!"
I flattened all my feathers, and looked around. It was the girl, her mom, and the vet.
I glared at them, and closed my eyes, only to be startled again by the girl picking my cage up.
"What is the matter with you???" I demanded, still grumpy after surgery.
"Look, Birdie likes me!" The girl sounded happy.
"No, you're scaring her," Her mom muttered angrily.
"Oh," She was disappointed.
The vet said nothing, glaring at the three of us, and not being his usual happy self.
They carried my cage to the counter, and the female human behind it said,"That would be $958.23,"
"Oh, yes, about that," The mom started politely, and nervously.
"Yes? Is there a problem?" It seemed like everyone was grumpy today.
"We can't pay for all that," She said shyly.
"Well, I'm sorry, but you have to. We saved your bird's life,"
"We didn't ask for that,"
"Yes you did, and not doing so is against the law!" She announced.
The other human didn't reply, just stared at me with despise.
"What are you looking at?" I demanded her,"It's your fault I was sick in the first place! This is unfair! This is more than unfair, this is insanity! What is wrong with you, human???"
The human behind the counter looked at me.
"It seems like Polly wants you to pay, too."
I screeched at her. The atmosphere in the room was not helping my grumpiness.
The girl's mom didn't say anything, just left with her daughter.
"Wait! You must pay it!" The human yelled, "This is not the end of it!"
