Chapter Seven

I stared at my friend Sky through two sets of bars. The human had left a few minutes ago, and I was left, stunned by what she had done.
"Why would that human do such a thing? I thought she was a friend! Isn't that why we trusted her enough to perch on her finger and let her pet our head?" I asked Sky. He seemed really upset, which was unusual for him.
"I just don't know, Apple. I really don't know," He mumbled, not making eye contact.
"At least we can talk to each other like this," I tried to cheer him up.
"Yes, but I already miss preening and snuggling with you."
I gave up on cheering him up, and went down for a drink of water. Sky just stood gloomily on his perch. I went back on mine, and did the same. We both soon appeared to be motionless statues.
I never thought life alone could be so boring. It was true what the old birds say, you never know how good something really is until you loose it, and I lost Sky just because of a simple, playful fight over a swing. Now, I thought that he could keep it forever if he could come back. I closed my eyes. Sometimes, life just didn't appear to be on your side.
A few hours later, the human came back with lots of new toys and perches. She decorated Sky's new cage that had nothing but food, water, and a perch before. This was one thing the human did right. Hopefully, Sky would cheer up a bit after getting all the new toys and treats.
The human came over to my cage, and tried taking me out. I wasn't in a good mood, so I refused to step up. She kept pressing her finger against my belly, so I had no choice but to do what she wanted. She took me out, and looked at me. I dozed off.
A few seconds later, I woke up to her deep voice saying, "Don't worry, Apple. He'll be back in a week. Then, hopefully, no one will get hurt." I didn't understand her voice, but I was comforted by it, and I closed my eyes again. We cuddled for a few minutes, then she gave me some millet, which I gladly accepted, and returned me to my cage.
I was slightly annoyed to find that Sky was still as gloomy as ever. "Cheer up!" I chirped, "It's going to be all right! Just look at all your new toys!"
"Easy for a bird that was just cuddled to say. And I can just tell you're jelous of my toys. Well, if you want them, you can have them!" He muttered, also annoyed with me.
I sighed, and hopped onto the perch next to my mirror. So maybe I was jelous of him. After all, he was a fancy mutation(or at least more fancy than I am), and he did get new toys, and the human did seem to like him more. So that's how it is! I'm supposed to be jelous for all the things he had and I didn't! The world was against me! I knew for sure now. But what was I supposed to do? I can't change how my feathers look, or how many toys he get, but maybe if I get the human to like me more, I would also get lots of toys! It was certainly something to consider.
The human was now playing with Sky. I chirped to get her attention. Sky looked at me, then looked away. The human said, "Sorry, Apple, but I can't take you out at the same time. Besides, you were out a few minutes ago." I guess that ment I wasn't going anywhere.
I closed my eyes. Oh well, maybe tomorrow. This isn't going to be something I would be rushed about.
