The local Pizza Restaurant is giving us their scraps of pizza and salad.

My Chickens live off my garden this time of year. My neighbor does the same. When I was at his house last, he had a pile of Summer Squash in the 100 X 100 pen. As far as Pizza is concerned, the previous posters were more than likely correct about too many ingredients that are not goof for your chickens. When your eggs start to taste like Pizza, you will know that we are right! Remember, just like for a Human, everything in moderation!

I still don't get it! How can she have 11 year old chickens in such conditions???? I'll go down to give them kale or dandelions and they're just as happy and healthy as can be! Tons of eggs too! :he Lol!
You should ask her where she got her chickens from.
Similar stories here and the plural is deliberate.
Lots of chicken keepers here don't feed their chickens commercial feed; they don't house them, vet them, pet them or even keep track of how many they have.
In my local chicken club, I'm considered a bit of a nut, fortunately they are a tolerant bunch.:)
I helped a guy in a farm a couple of kilometers down the track with an injured hen a while ago. He says she 12 years old. You wouldn't believe it judging by the fight she put up when we dealt with her wound. He feeds his chickens kitchen scraps and they don't have much land for them to forage in.

I have a Friend that works in Produce the Store lets Her put the scraps in a trash can and sell them to Me(big chain store won't give it away) for 15 cents a lb most bags run around$1.50-2.00 It stays in a cooler until I pick it up 1-2 times a week. most of it is Cabbage with Lettuce , Tomatoes Corn on the cob . The other day a Neighbor gave me a bag full of Corn Shucks My Chickens loved it . Every now and then I get them some whole grain bread from the local Bakery . It's just picked up from the store and sold as feed bread, $2.00 a rack ( racks hold 8-10 loafs) BTW My Chickens can't Free Range But They had a choice to stay inside or go outside into 2 different Wire Lots that are covered with wire .

I know where they came from, the same feedstore I got mine from. I think this quad of hens has hit the jackpot genetically. She's had several batches since then not all from that feedstore and their survival rates haven't been spectacular. About like mine, lol.

I was at a little cookout/pool party tonight with the family. 4 adults and 3 kids.

I came home with a quart Ziploc full to the top of corn cobs, watermelon rinds, a hot dog or two, one burger nobody ate, and a few little odds and ends (a few nibbles of pasta salad, part of a hamburger bun, a few chip crumbs).

The girls enjoyed it as a late-day snack before turning in for the night.

There was no leftover beer though. I drank all that....sorry ladies! :p:D

I once worked company that gave me food scraps all the time. So I fed it to the chickens. They came to expect great things from a red and white plastic bag opening. They also loved their sauce. It didn’t seem to affect there laying. I sometimes now when I go out to eat. If I notice a table full of uneaten food I will ask the waiter to pack it up for me for my animals. They don’t seem to mind. Neither do the animals. You almost have to see how they do I think. There probably a lot of factors.

Or Tequila either

Why not feed chickens food off plates? I can't think of a better use on the planet (including composting) to properly manage food waste.
Songster, I agree totally with you. We Americans waste more food then any other country. My chickens get all my scraps from the kitchen, esp. from dinner scraps. I have no obese chickens, all good layers. Nothing goes to waste here, chickens or compost. I worked in an Italian kitchen last year and brought home all scraps, salads, trimmings, pasta, bread, etc. No ill effects!!
