Chapter 22
I woke 5 minutes later from a huge crunching branch. I looked around. I didn't see much. It was still day time. I peered over bushes and under my tree. Huh, nothing. Strange. I stayed awake and hidden just in case it was a predator. Who knows, it could be a deer. I shrugged and hid a little more.
My stomache was growling. I'm hungry, very hungry. I kept looking around for any predators. I didn't see any. I got down slowly branch to branch. When I finally reached the ground, I looked everywhere. Nothing to be seen besides green grass and bushes. I slowly went over to the clearing, still very catious. I looked back up at my nest. Babies are safe.
I caught some bugs and felt better. I heard another noise. This time rustling in the bushes. All the sudden a racoon jumped out. I screamed and ran for the nearest tree. I flew high up. The coon was climbing. I had a plan.
It got closer and closer. It was a foot away from my feet and I jumped right on his eyes. I sunck my nails really hard in him. He yelped and wimpered and fell 20 feet landing on his back. He was all gross and bloody. He looked dead. I got down to the last branch and stared at him. I didn't see his heart pounding at all. He was dead. I felt so proud of myself!
"Yay!" I shouted. But then I shut my mouth. I didn't want any other animal hearing me.
I was standing there, smiling and all happy.
Oh no! I raced to my nest and the eggs were still hot. I'm not leaving this nest for a while. I got a little teary eyed, hoping they'd be alright.
It was day 3 today. Wow, short. It felt like years since I left the coop.
I started to think about Pepper and Ethel and how they are treating each other.
I remembered their last fight....
"Pepper that piece of bread is mine!"
"Ethel I don't think it matters. It's only one piece. Go get your own!"
Ethel was ragging, "Give me it!"
Pepper ran so fast. She told me that the way Ethel was acting was pretty funny.
This was when they were young. about 15 weeks old. They were still little girls.
Oh the good old times!
I was starting to get tired so I fell right to sleep while still thinking about Ethel and Pepper.
