The 'Lotsa Poop Chicken Coop' ***Poop Drawer Update***

My husband wants to know when are you coming over to built our chickens a coop? We have plenty of beer and I make a darn good cobbler....

BTW, that's one fine looking dog you have there. Looks pretty smart too. This is Milo the Wonder Dog, who is alot smarter than he looks, when he was a lettle fella'




We lived in Sonoma County west of Santa Rosa for 10 years, your view reminded my of that area ....are you in northern CA?

It's the same country, but were in the foothills aways east of Sacto. And it was HOT today!

Today was a full day. 8 to 4. We're tired of carrying these birds from the garage to the coop in the morning, and back again in the evening. Even more tired of being pooped on during the journey. I'm not used to this, and I'm real low on beer. But it looks like I'm headed up to Salem to drink beer, eat cobbler, and build a coop. I hope they're rich!!!!

So first off I'd like to offer these collectibles to any member of BYC. I was gonna auction them off on Fleabay, but y'all deserve the first crack



After I installed the ramp a couple of birds were 'Slip Slidin' away' (1970's). So, not wanting them to break a thigh or a drumstick, I went ahead and put the non-skid stuff on,,,,,,,,at a buck forty-nine per foot!!!!!!! Ya kinda get dizzy looking at it. Hmmmmmm,,,,,,



Ugh! Now it's time to deal with the nesting boxes. Why do chickens nest? Why can't they just be like salmon? Go uptown, lay some eggs, return home. Simple! The coop door fit as shown on the left side of the pic. More on this later.



Lid cut, fitted, and braced. Found some EPDM weatherstripping, so I thought I'd give it a try to stop rain from leaking into those precious little nesting boxes!!

And now all the hardware is on, and the hasps are secured with Virgin Island Legumes. Many people prefer to call these Caribeaners, but that's so 80's! Same for the People door and the clean-out door.








So here's the prebuilt Coop door. Looks pretty good, eh. Fits just right. I was so proud. See anything wrong? It's important I get this right, 'cause the supervisor is lurking in the background. Little snoop!!!!

Voila! What Ur looking at here is the top of the coop door and the bottom on the roof truss. Pretty sweet huh??? This was when the first Miller Lite got popped!!!!

OK, so now what to do? Well I think it's safe to say that the beautifully designed poop board will not get built today. Hmmm, how many folks do ya know that can constructively use the words 'beautifully' and 'poop' in the same sentence, and everyone is on the edge of their seats to find out what it's all about? That's right,,,I rock!!!!

Meanwhile, back on the farm. I mean,,the door. After careful measuring (Measurement Deficit Syndrome did not apply here) I determined that the jigsaw and circular saw would not work due to the lack of clearance. So the Dremel Multi-Max comes out. The problem with these things are the dysfunctional cuts they make, especially in a 2x4. Oh well.



But remember,,,,,'Putty and paint, makes it what it ain't'.





Got the roost bar cut, routed, and painted, then installed on simple metal shelf brackets that cost more than a box of screws. What's up with that?



And, because they were so uncoordinated on the ramp, I went ahead and put the non-skid stuff on the roost board. Did I mention this stuff was $1.49 a foot????!!!!!!

And the cleaned out interior of the coop.



My wife has stuck by my side during the entire building of this coop, and kept me from those bad measurements and crooked cuts. But I told her today she was free. I could finish the coop, and she could go do all those wifey things. Right now she's out tending to the burn pile. Tomorrow she can get on the mower and mow the property, then do some pruning. I told her that as a reward, I might even let her shovel some dirt into the vegetable beds. Yep,,,she sure is one lucky gal.

Tomorrow I do the poop board, cut and nail some trim, and hopefully wrap it all up. All I can say is, those Crazy Crappers are in their new home with fresh pine shavings on the floor. It'll be like a camp out t-nite. Maybe I'll even cook them some hot dogs and roast a marshmallow or two. Lucky wife, lucky birds,,,,what can I say?

So...I was perusing Craigslist for pond supplies and found a light house/play house. It's about 36 sq feet of floor space and twelve feet tall and its FREE. well, except for the truck we have to rent to haul it. If you PM me you address and I'll mail you a cobbler for all your hard work and because you made me LMAF. BTW, my husband also thinks tending the burn pile, pruning and mowing are wifey activities.

I almost forgot. I wanted everyone to know that I did NOT go over budget on this coop and run. The secret? Don't start with a budget!! (I haven't even tallied up all the receipts) Heck, I can always refinance at a lower rate!!

I know that is the truth about a budget. I was told the chicks house was going to be better than our house. I do not even want to know what I spent so far.

I lost count of how many times I LOL'd while reading this. I think the coop looks great and I now have a new saying: "Putty and paint makes it what it ain't." I think it is better than my old one: "Caulk covers a multitude of sins."
