no trade just take the lab....I don't need more critters right now....did I mention the tadpoles I am growing for the kids?
Not the lab! I have enough dog! I was referring to the kids or chickens.

When we leave town I hire the middle school boy across the street or high school girl next door. I only have 8 so all they have to do is let them out in the morning, check food and give fresh water and close the coop at night. Mine are in a fenced run but they always go back in at night so they never have to chase them down. And I tell them they can keep the eggs they gather for the week plus about $25 and they always say yes.....they love our chickens.Good Morning Everyone!
Couple of things we need a little advice on:
- Had a little bantam get into a fly strip this morning. Got her out and she is fine but her leg feathers and under one of her wings is a little sticky. Do we need to try and clean that off, if so, with what? She is out and about, eating and acting normally. I am checking periodically to make to sure nothing large is stuck to her or on her foot.
- We are going on vacation in October. We live close to downtown Nashville and have cats/dogs/chickens. We have someone we trust to come and watch our dogs/cats but this will be the first time we have ever vacationed since we have had the chickens. They are in a coop/run and we let them free range in their 'play yard' (fenced in area of our backyard) during the day. For the most part they are good if we let them out in the morning and just make sure they all made it back in at night. However I do check on them periodically during the day. Anyone have any tips or best practices for what to do for chickens while you are on vacation. These are our pets and we certainly don't want anything to happen to them. Our pet sitter could definitely handle the feeding/watering/collecting eggs - I just worry about them being out unsupervised all day and asking him to wrangle them in in the evening if needed. I thought maybe building a larger or temporary run onto their existing coop run so that they still have room to graze, etc without him having to 'let them out/put them up'.??????? What have you all used to do that (if you have)?
Thanks in advance for any advice/ideas/experiences you share.
P.S. Anyone have a trusted chicken sitter that you might share info for? ;-)
Morning!
I don't mean to step into the middle of a bunch of conversation, but I thought I'd stop in and say "hi!"
My wife and I are originally from Tullahoma but live in downtown Murfreesboro now.
We adopted a lost Buff Orpington a few months ago and just bought a Black Sex-link and Blue Cochin Bantam to keep her company.
I'm glad to see that there is such a strong community of chicken owners in the area!
Wish you'd gotta a pic of that, it sounds adorable!Welcome!!!
Raine- I usually stop the bigger girls at 12 eggs.
I had a missing faverolle re-appear last year after a few weeks. She did a big shake right in front of me and out fell a dozen multicolored fluffballs. I never did find the nest.

The Buckeye hen came off her eggs when I feed this am. There was a huge pile, so she & the pullet are both still adding eggs.
I grabbed the biggest 3 in the middle of the pile, they were hot. Down at the house they candled clear, but I put them in the bator just in case so I can re-candle in a few days.
The guy I got Mr Buckeye from has offered me a younger repacement, I'm really torn, Mr Buckeye has made prizewinning offspring as recently as last yr. He is just amazing.
He even killed a full grown Raccoon last month, so while he is obviously past his prime for some duties he is still a great bird, so calm & docile to me, HUGE, etc. if only I could just get one replacement cockeral out of him I'd be thrilled (and save a hassle getting a replacement from out of state). sigh. ...
