The Middle Tennessee Thread

These are the ones I was posting about the other day, all the F1 have pea combs, of those the subset w/ slate legs and puffy face feathers (who all are also black btw) all lay blue or green so far as I've had reports back or kept them myself. The ones hatched last night F2 were from the 2 who have laid all winter, a blue & a green respectively, I'm fairly certain they had different moms b/c one girl is 2x the size of the other and the smaller girl has a red-gold neckless that made everyone think she was a cockerel until the eggs started coming, the big girl is just solid black. My neighbor's sold black green egg layer is a full or half sister. On the very bad down side, that Roo turned expreamly aggressive at age 4 & went to freezer , and so far all his sons that I know have have gotten nasty at maturity and are going directly to the freezer. I'm hesitant to continue the line to F3 for that reason, but the girls do lay _really dependably so I'm torn on it...

So after your 3 yrs on the wagon what are you gonna set first?

Right now in the bator I have --
a) more of these mutt EEs
b) 24 eggs from Pappa Brooder, several breeds incl. BCM, some of his F2EEs, Lav something, a tiny tiny white egg I can't figure the code on, Ame
C)10 U of A Blues <-- was on a waiting list for 15!! months for these eggs , went into bator last night.
D)1 which I believe is from my SFH hen under my new SFH Roo, 1st egg of the spring we'll see if it is fertile...

I have 5 open spots, I'm so tempted to take either the olive or choc. eggs get today to fill those spots just for the heck of it, there is temp. a mutt roo w/ that flock as his re-homing situation wasn't ready when I reorganized pens, he is very nice temperament but unknown cross from a friend who's pures were all running together for the winter, so tempting to see what he produces...

Well....since you ask.....LOL! I want to hatch some of my own eggs, I have a BCM roo over 2 BR hens and one BS maran hen. Love the blues! I want to get some SBEL eggs, some BBS AM's, some olive eggers, and a few Lav Ams. I like Orpingtons too, might get some if the opportunity arises, and I want some guineas and possibly some turkeys too this year. Am trying to downsize my horse herd this year as I no longer will be breeding them...and want to get more into chooks, goats, pigs, maybe a cow? We will see what happens...BTW, what is U of A Blues if I might ask?

Off the Goonies lol. We have Mouth, Reba, (lost Barbara Jean), Whiskers, Zoltar, and Sparky (off Puss'n'Boots) Salt and Pepper.
We had Chica, Mumble, and Gloria but sold them to a friend wanting to start having backyard chickens.

My 8yr old names them

that's too funny, we've named some of the horses from movies, like Dune, and Lord of the Rings...cool names!

Here are the specific breeds i'm interested in after doing research. You guys probably know more than me, so any breeds that have similar characteristics i'm interested in. Instead of "wants", I only have two "DONT wants" - No aggressive breeds and I don't want any "flighty" birds.

Barred Plymouth Rock
Buff Orpington
Rhode Island Red
Easter Eggers
Ameraucanas
Dominique

Looking for 3-4 pullets as young as possible, preferably day to week old but beggars can't be choosers so i'm open to anything close.
I'd definitely recommend Donna….she has great birds and is always hatching. Not sure what she's got right now but you can PM her …..DMRippy…….

I've got some of DMRippy's eggs incubating right now on day 11. This morning we had a 7 hour power outage. I woke up soon as the power went out and wrapped blankets on the bator. Seemed to do the trick. After the power came back on I gave it about an hour before I moved the blankets to check, and the recorded low was only 68. I think I'll be ok with that, as I've read people experience longer outages and lower temps and still hatch birds. These are far enough along I can't really see them moving anymore, so I guess Sat. evening when I do the 14 day candling, as long as they are all full looking I'll be good.
Hope everybody else has fared well through the ice and bad roads. We went to Madison today and you couldn't tell we've had bad weather by looking there, but when we got back to our house in Dickson co. all the trees still have ice on them and several roads are still mucky. School is closed again tomorrow.

oh Sam! I hope they are ok.

we still have snow and ice at the house even after today but it is melting quick. now at the farm there is almost no snow there after today. it is like two different planets just 10 miles apart.

We should do an egg swap next time we meet up and then do a group hatch. Everyone could bring a dozen eggs and go home with a dozen assorted varieties. It would definitely make for excited hatch days as random chicks popped out. :)
