The Middle Tennessee Thread

As I said, hatcheries typically breed for productivity and mix breeds in the process, but I think it is a bit assumptive to paint with so broad a brush to say all hatcheries. It fully depends on where you draw the line on what is considered a hatchery and in reality, there would be nothing preventing a commercial hatchery from legitimately specializing in heritage fowl of heritage quality. There are several thread members on here that hatch and sell chicks. While I don't think any on them would consider themselves a hatchery, someone might and my post was not intended to cast judgment on anyone, merely share some info and participate in the conversation.

Is there anybody on here close to the Nashville area that would be interested in mutt turkey eggs? I've collected 5 since last Monday, and soon as I get 1 more I'm going to incubate them to see how fertility is. I wish I had a second bator to use as a hatcher, I would just keep hatching them. But, I don't so I don't want to see the eggs go to waste. Thought I'd see if a fellow BYC'er may want some turks. My hen lays every other day, so I can collect a half dozen every couple weeks.
The Tom is a big boy ( upper 20 to lower 30 pounds ) and the hen is a naragansett. She's probably in the 18-20 pound range. He is from a naragansett tom over a midget white hen, so there's lot's of genes in the pool for this go round.

I would LOVE to grow out some turkeys for eating. The best turkey I have ever had was a FRESH turkey. Hubby would KILL me..... really he would...... If you need and incubator and they are the same as chickens I can hatch them for you if you want.

Hmm- I guess if I let them ride in my bator the 25 days I could transport them to your hatcher in time. Both times so far I've incubated them they've pipped before I had them locked down. Maybe I'll set this first six, then collect some and do a trial run with transporting them to your hatcher. Normally I'd be scared to death to do that, but after the power outage for the hatch I just finished ( which went great! ) I'm not so scared to drive them 35 mins. up the road to hatch.
I'm in if you're in! Of course you can have some to grow for eating.

I really do appreciate the offer, but if I had a cabinet bator I would want to fill it up... I mean no sense running it for 6-8 eggs right? Then before you know it I would have crowded pens that don't exist yet, a big feed bill, and 2 kids that gripe about all the poop they have to shovel. LOL
I better start a little slower.
