The Middle Tennessee Thread

I'm
Speaking of spiders, but slightly on a different note;
Does anyone on here have any idea what I can use to kill/repel ticks?  We are trying to move, and where we are moving to is completely INFESTED with small ticks....not the seed ticks, but close, and also the larger ticks both deer and dog varieties....over a 2 day period both my husband and I were covered in bites, and we have ALOT more work to do there before we can move chickens in and get some guinea keets purchased and raised to help.  I don't want to poison the area for future chicken/guinea/turkeys, but DO want to be able to camp/work there without constantly picking ticks off and being covered in bites!

I'm interested too. I've never seen ticks so small! I just picked 4 of the dog, I'm scared to check the cat. I do have 4 Guineas, but they have about 8 acres to cover until I can get more.

so I am having DH build a cage. It is roughly 4x8. My delima is that when we made the nest boxes we put them at the top of the coup hanging out one end so we can reach them easily. Granted I don't have anyone laying yet, but should I have poor them down towards the bottom further? It will be chicken tractor ish, so a laser won't really work, but I can pout a couple perches so that they can hop from one to the next to the top. Will they do that? I will have 14 birds in there (8 weeks old) for a bit until I figure out who I'm keeping. Suggestions?

That pen will have Easter eggers from TSC in there. So far it looks like only 2 are male, what luck!

BTW, the Dickson show was great today. Question, are LF the same as 'regular chickens' or will it usually be specified like bantams? My husband kind of freaked at the LF. I didn't think ours would get that big, but maybe?

Yes LF = Large Fowl as far as I know their are only LF & Bantamn.
I went to the show also. It was pretty cool, my 1st chicken show. I completed my mission, hens & pullet delivered & eggs collected for DMRippy. I was good & only came home with 2 birds. A pair of Crele Polish. I couldn't resist the cotton ball heads on them plus my White Crested Black Polish was lonely for distant relatives. From what I understand there's another show in Newport Tn. in 2 weeks that's much larger. I won't be going to that one I've got plans to go welcome my Marine son home from deployment.

Anyone need any roos I have some BOs and some Doms that need a home and congratulations on your sons return from the core tell him I said ty

Babies are the WORST. They can't control their venom. We had a little copper head in the water cut off at the farm.... little thing too. I don't remember what we did with that. Not sure we would have taken a chance with him and our hands in the same place. I also had a close call when I was pregnant. We had beavers (yes we have those too) building a dam in our part of the creek and we were clearing it out. I reached in pulled the debris out and before I could toss it my 26 year old son yelled "SNAKES" 2 little copperheads were swimming away from the area I just pulled the debris from..... YIKES

Copperheads and Cottonmouths are related both tend to like water areas..... not that you will not find copperheads other places. That copperhead was about 1700 feet from the creek. He was well hidden in the litter of the leaves on the ground.

We have LOTS and LOTS of woods around all the houses in the area. Most of the properties have over 30 acres we have 68 and only 12 or so are clear. so we have lots and lots of wild life and snakes are expected..... we just don't like the deadly ones.

We have about 4 acres of woods but live across the road from 2700 acres they have been logging. Lots of creepy crawly things here. I need guineas and a couple pigs.

I haven't been on in a few days, and I saw the Clarksville link. Now we have to have permits for our hens? Whyyyyyyyyyyyy!? Are we grandfathered or do I have to move my coop, again?

I had a great time at the Volunteer State Poultry Show today and looking forward to the next show. :)
I hate that I didn't get a chance to speak to Pat Malone as he was very busy doing a great job judging the poultry today. Other than not getting to talk to Pat the day was perfect. As I got to talk to Terry Disney and many others.
I got BV & RV with a couple of my Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks but with that being said I also need to say I was the only one with Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks at the show. LOL :)
Terry Disney got BB in the Plymouth Rocks with a very nice "LARGE" White Plymouth Rock cockerel. :)

I was so busy talking to Terry Disney and others getting breeding advice & understanding how the point system works I completely forgot to get pictures. sorry :/
