The Middle Tennessee Thread

Well, I'm fairly certain it was coccidious that killed my boy. I should have fed them the medicated feed longer. I had meds that I bought this year for my chicken first aid kit so it has been added to the water for my other three.

Since they were moved outside to that coop a few months ago, they have been on an all sand run. Last weekend we moved the coop onto fresh ground that didn't have sand yet. I am so mad at myself. I thought they would have built up immunity, but I was wrong because they weren't exposed directly to the ground on a gradual basis when they were younger. Checked the coop this morning and found a bloody dropping under where he used to roost.

Live and learn. It is so easy to think everything is ok and let down the guard. Back to medicated feed, gradual ground exposure, and a splash of vinegar in everyones water.

There is cocci in the ground all through Tennessee. It's just there. When we get a lot of wet followed by warm (pretty much spring through fall here) those little spores just pop right out. I learned a while ago that the medicated chick started wasn't potent enough to keep it at bay at my house. I mostly brood in the house, so when I move them outside I immediately start a week or two of corrid in the water bowls. By the time you start seeing bloody poop it is almost too late to save them all. I'd rather take the preventative route than have to try to nurse them back to health.

Babies brooded outside with a mama seem to develop an immunity with no problem. I have heard that bringing in a pan of dirt for the inside babies to play in can also help build up that immunity. Sometimes I remember to do that and sometimes not. I have just learned to dose them up and be done.

You can get the corrid powder at TSC. It's expensive, but if you keep it sealed up and airtight it will last for a while. I keep most of it in the pantry with a little baggie of it outside that I dose from. If you leave it outside in this humidity it gets gummy and icky.

I'm so sorry that your lost your boy. It is hard. Those illnesses that hit fast seem the hardest because you just don't see it coming. :(

New to chickens in Ashland City, but been a bird girl for a long time. I call my place "Preen Acres".

Looking for other chicken folk around here.
I live in Ashland City right down town. I have a farm at the Davidson/Cheatham Co line. LOTS of chickens..... what do you have?

Feed with meds will not prevent Cocci. They might help some but if exposed to it they need meds ASAP. They drop like flies if you don't, even if you do..... very hard to treat cocci after you see symptoms.

When you say bloody poop was it JUST BLOOD like someone got cut? That is Cocci, if it was poop with some blood that does not mean it was Cocci. Chickens will poop sometimes with some blood and it is NORMAL. With chicks I see just blood on shavings I start treating. Now that I have everyone on wire floors I am hoping those losses will be NULL from now on. I have never had a big bird die from Cocci after I put them out side. They do get med feed till they lay though. Like I said though it will NOT PREVENT cocci!

I'm interested in knowing what other products are in your guys' medicine cabinets for chickens. I just realized that my Turkeys have blackhead. They were dropping about 1 per week and I never made the disease convection, I thought it was random things. I got them on a dewormer and three last 3 are still alive for now. I feel dumb that I didn't have needs of any kind on hands and my TSC seems not to carry much. I couldn't find corid, but my not have been looking in the right place.

What else should I have on hand? Is there natural ways to prevent cocci and such? Is like to be as natural and unmedicated ad possible, but I will use it is necessary, like now.

I'm truing to figure out what to do to be able to get Turkeys again and make sure they don't get sick.
