Quote: WAY too pricey though. Our chicken tractors costs us less than $100, and we spent less than $200 on our breeding pens.
I think with my 10 big breeding pens I have less than $400 in ALL 10 pens. I had to buy some hardware, screws, fencing and wire, roofing...... Then I had to add a covered run and that was about $600 for the labor he gave me the roofing panels. But still that is about $100 a pen.

I am going to be building some new pens soon so I am keeping an eye out for FREE materials on CL to build with. Building sites are full of great scrapes.

Our power just came on after being off for 12+ hours :barnie I woke up at about 4:30 this morning to complete darkness (fell asleep with the tv on). I have eggs in the incubator and chicks in an outside hutch. I quickly wrapped the bator in a blanket, but the temp dropped pretty low for most of the time. And, I grabbed the 20 chicks in the hutch and put them in a tote until the sun came up and I could dig my extra dog crate out of the barn. There were 26 chicks in that hutch :hit I feel so bad for them, I don't know how long they were out there without heat, and it was frigid here last night. I have a couple the are keeping themselves fluffed up, but other than that the rest look okay. They're back out in their hutch now which I stuffed with extra hay. Hopefully the power will stay on now, I'm not looking forward to have to move them all around again if it goes back out :/

Yall got hit pretty hard. I am surprised you got electricity back this quick. I hope everything is ok and you and the babies can stay warm.

The power went off again about an hour or so after I made that post, and came back on about 30 minutes ago. I brought the chicks back inside, they're having a slumber party next to the wood stove. I'll put them back out when I'm sure the powers going to stay on. They're doing a great job of making my house smell like chickens, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I CANT WAIT FOR SPRING!!!!

Glad you have heat. We can survive with out a lot but not heat.

2? days till spring. Look on the bright side we got way way into winter before we got hit..... it was a hard hit though. I think we are skipping church tomorrow and I am not sure I want to go to the farm. It was bad...... solid ice.... no snow to keep your grip with.

We just got power back, it's been out since Monday. No power and no water. I lost all the eggs in the bator, but a dog crate of newly hatched chicks spent the week next to the wood stove and appear to have come through it ok. My how we get creative when necessary.

We knew Monday morning things would get bad so we filled the tub. We were able to flush toilets and water rabbits out of the tub all week. The volunteer fire department brought us 175 gallons of water mid week for the cattle, sheep and poultry.
We are still kicking ourselves that our switch panel and battery bank were not hooked up at this time of year. We're redesigning all that so it was just sitting there not hooked up - not good when that means you have no well pump.

We have a broken windshield and acres and acres of downed trees on fence lines and in pastures, but everyone came through it ok so i guess we can't complain.

On a positive note, I got a lot of experience cooking a variety of meals on the wood stove.

So... now to get the youngest back to TTU tomorrow IF they even have class Monday.

WOW that is not good. Glad I don't have much in the bator. If I had it full we would have lost power. LOL.

Sorry you will have a lot of clean up. Glad everyone survived.
