The Middle Tennessee Thread

Hey everyone! I'm brand new to chickens but I'm super excited to get started. I started building my coop this week. Just looking to hear recommendations from the pros haha debating getting a bator and hatch my own or buying at the moment

Welcome! Incubators are DANGEROUS! They will get you in trouble really quickly. If you want to start slower. Get some chicks.... then you will have to wait for a broody to get more......well we seem to always find a way around that.

Ahhhhh. Well then I guess chicks it will be. Do you have an recommendations on types and quantity? 8x8 coop with run

Where are you?  What are you thinking you want out of chickens brown eggs, blue eggs, white eggs, green eggs?  High production like a white leghorn or reg production like a barred rock?
I'm in Tullahoma. And I'm looking for reg. production no preference in egg color

Hatching is completely addictive!!! And loads of fun too.

Which breeds to get is totally a personal decision. Like Donna said, decide what you want from them and then pick birds that fit that criteria. If you are unfamiliar with the different breeds, a hatchery website like Meyer Hatchery or McMurray Hatchery will be a quick way to scroll through and read up on the different types. You can search by egg color and look at pictures of grown roosters, hens and baby chicks. You can purchase chicks from the hatchery or just poll the audience here. There are a ton of us in the middle TN area that hatch and pretty much every breed is covered somewhere.
Donna's signature line has a link the the Tennessee Breeder's list. That would be a good place to start to find someone local.

Good luck and welcome to the group!

Yes hatching is addicting. I have hatched 60 within the last month. As for breed it depends on what you want out of it. I like having a mix of breeds cause they all offer something different.
