I feel like such an under-achiever! I only have 7, but I DID mention to my DH this afternoon that I was going to order some chicks. He was fine with it. Of course, I had already ordered them a couple weeks ago . . . but was waiting for a good time to bring up the topic to him. LOL! They'll be delivered right after Labor Day. The next subject I'll bring up is that I'd really like to try hatching some eggs - I'll probably wait till the new chicks are at least 3 or 4 months old before I bring that up.

One of my EEs laid her first egg today - a light brown one. I had just assumed that since she was an EE, she'd lay something in the blue/green range. It's a pretty color, though, and I am thrilled she's finally laying. She's the last of my 7 to lay. However, now I'm more determined to get a blue egg layer.

I am getting the prettiest blue from my pullet EE

Holly is she just an EE if so what is crossed with? So pretty!!!

One of my hatchery EEs lays a brown egg.

Three laid green eggs and one laid brown.

I had assumed that all the EEs I am hatching out would be green egg layers since their daddy is a pure ameraucana, but the blue one Holly got lays brown somehow. Now I am completely confused about blue egg genetics. I thought they had to have one blue egg gene in the mix to make them be green egg layers. Somehow that didn't happen this time. Dunno.

Hey that chicken math adds up quick!!!

I started off with 5 hens x 3 breeds with one rooster each..... a year this last April easily doubled....but more pure breeds I am trying to work with and make some pretty EEs... so yes lots of enablers on here.

7 is alot! Trust me. I am overwelmed with 7 breeds and that doesn't count the other animals on my farm. I have a bad habit of biting off more than I can chew

And as for EEs I have heard so much about them and im really interested in adding a few to my flock. And as for egg color I have know idea. I know all about goat and cattle gentics but chicken genetics seem a little more confusing and I just haven't found time to research it. Though I really want to

Austintgraf-If you really like Wyandotte's I really suggest not getting hatchery stock-other than the ones you already have
love.gif
.They are nice but lack Wayndotte type and correct color.Definitely don't get blue laced red from one they have used the Gold lace for them and the color is way off...No worries there I hear someone pretty close has some real nice blue lace red and a flock of Partridge from Jerry's flock
tongue2.gif
The partridge still are being worked on since they almost got lost over the years but they are still real nice.
7 breeds and just starting YES you will be one of us shortly...I'm on the other side now cutting back on the breeds and variety but I still love them all.

Anne-the EE can inherit either gene the blue or the brown..if they inherit the brown you get brown layers if they inherit the blue then you get green..that's why I usually only use my minty layers with my Ameraucana then you know you will get color since there is no brown gene to inherit. If I use a brown/white layer I tell people until it lays you just don't know.If you use an EE roo you don't necessarily know what gene he has and he could be carrying the brown gene and even with ee hens the eggs could be brown. So,if you use an EE know for sure what his parentage is or you will have to wait until lots of his chicks hatch and start laying to see what happens with a green layer. I'm down to just a few ee all lay blue just like my Ameraucana but if you don't want green don't use brown and you will always get blue and not green..or you will get as nice as the color egg the Ameraucana line has..not all lay blue either.

Okla...www.foleyswaterfowl.com I need to figure out when I'm heading up there..tomorrow may be the only day this coming week I'm free possibly Friday.

Ahh out to play and feed with my birdies..

I agree with that statement though I am very new to the whole purebred chicken thing. I am still not sure what are good lines and what aren't and where to get them from. I know the standards and I know how to judge chickens and how to show chickens. Hatchery stock wouldn't have been my first choice either but when you get excited about a project you just jump for it. I will only be keeping the best of my hatchery stock and hoping to introduce high quality roosters to start a breeding up program. As a said earlier I am young and knew to this and if anybody has advice or tips or might could help show me the ropes I would greatly appreciate it. I have read probably every chicken book written and it still hasn't prepared me well enough

no not enough to handle this thread

For SL there are no better one's than Jerry's. He just exported some they are so nice..a nice pair starts around $100 and goes up from there and he's always in short supply. I'm trying to stay away from his sl because I have so many other projects going on with the blr and partridge both needing so much time put into those colors still.Paul's in FL but if I post anything about his birds or his "customer service" they will boot me off here so I shall only say...pm me

Byc moles are everywhere waiting to pounce

Even when I'm nice I get in trouble

Most other blr breeders have bought from one or both.Mine are straight Jerry stock..Foley to those that don't know who Jerry is.We have just changed roos and sold our other one with his hens..really looks like some nice things will come out of this new boy..I can't wait to see some of them growing up.My Partridge are almost ready to lay but my roo is clueless so it will be a bit on anything coming out of that pen.I'm not a patient person

You can use hatchery stock and work up and depending on where you plan to go with them how well it will work for you.If you have the big shows in sight it's cheaper to buy breeders and leave the hatchery ones for egg laying and even a cheaper but pretty option for people to buy.If your wanting to have fun and basically enjoy the flock then using hatchery to start will be fine..if you only planning to show local fairs..well don't get us started again there
