The Middle Tennessee Thread

Ok.....I am officially what my kids call a "bird nerd".....and I'm loving it!!!! This is my first EGG!!! I am beside myself......They have become sooooo friendly lately. My Dominique, Oprah, jumped in my lap this evening and sat there while I pet her!!! Then my daughter was trying to get them out of the coop so I could give them a treat when she found our first egg! This morning my suspected Silkie Roo crowed for the first time....although I don't think you can call a Silkie's crow a real "crow"....anyhow he crowed this morning and tonight we found the smaller "pinkish" egg. I have laid it next to the Publix brown egg so you can see the size and color.....do you think it's from the Silkie pullet, the Dominique, the Rhode Island Red, or....and I doubt this.... the Copper Blue Maran? I'm just wondering because the Silkie is a good 4-6 weeks younger than the other 3.

While we are at it......I have a really "handsome" white Silkie Roo, in need of a home......I hate to give him up but I cannot have a Roo....I've included his picture, he was named after my Grandmother "Hattie", but now bears my Grandfathers name "Hobert".....I just want to find him a good home and I know everyone on this blog will love him.

Hey Cinny, He actually doesnt live to far away. 45 min north of Bowling Green, KY.
Eastview I believe.
Its easier for me because I litterly live on the border of KY/TN. So it was prolly an hour and half drive from me. but poor donna.. she drove from nash/ashland city.

My choc. roo is crowing:] so cute
just cleaned bantam pens, now to grow out coop...
Is he a hatchery of just someone you know about.....has anyone heard of Poultry Hollow Hatchery in Brush Creek Tennessee about an hour outside Nashville past Lebanon? I'm looking to add a few pullets to my little brood, a Polish, a SLW, and a Buff Orpington.....don't want to start from chicks, and the new larger coop will be here in about a month.

Cinny-
Lot's of people have posted about Poultry Hollow, and it's a mixed bag of comments. Some folks love them and some hate them, yet others are just happy to get some chickens. You can search them on here and google as well and just read reviews and draw your own opinions I guess.

we got some chicks from poultry hollow in may this year and I would not recommend going there and getting chicks....I did not like the condition the chicks were living in...all of the brooders were in a old barn and in the brooder boxes it looked like it had not been cleaned out in forever...all of the chicks were just walking in poop. in some of the brooders she did not even know what breeds were in there I wanted a light brahma and she was going to give me a white rock...then I told her I wanted splash silkies...well I got partridge instead...the birds that she does not use in her breeding program are free ranged and they are beautiful...but I am sure if the breeding birds are taken care of anything like the chicks are they look horrible...but if you just want to get chicks and dont really mind what condition they live in before you bring them home then it is a good place to get chicks because she does have alot of different breeds ...but I will never go back again....the chicks we got from poultry hollow are beautiful and now as far as I know healthy...but recently we have had 3 to die when the first died they were 14 weeks and the 3rd just died 1 week ago...we contacted UT extension and the doctor there told us that is was mareks I am still not 100% sure that it is mareks and I never will be until we have a necropsy done...but if it is mareks the only place it could have come from that I know of is poultry hollow...because we have brought no other birds in and there has never been another chickens close enough to spread to them...the closest chickens to ours is 1/2 mile away....I am still hoping that it is not mareks...I stoped using a water hose to fill their water containers hoping maybe the the lead in the hoses is what made the 3 chicks die...their symptoms are for the first day very sleepy all of the time just laying around..early 2nd day hard to stand not balance late second day cant walk at all when I stand them up they just fall over...yet when I lay them on their back and push on their feet they push back...3rd day death one did not even make it to the 3rd day...she died the 2nd night....so I am not sure what it could be....but anyway I would not go to poultry hollow..if I could I would go back in time and stop myself from getting those chicks...I love them but now I would have rather got what I wanted from a breeder....but my 33 chicks that I got from TSC were very healthy I have never had a problem out of them...only one bantam died 2 days after we got him...and until 4 weeks ago I had only lost 2 out of 60 chicks. so from now on I will only buy my layers from TSC and my breeding birds from other breeders

Here is the link to the BLRW thread with pics.... I don't have time to repost all those pics
