The Middle Tennessee Thread

That was my first thought. I had a roo do that...I thought he hurt his leg, took him out of the pen, he got some better started to get up and about some. Next thing I know he is acting like he had a stroke. I am not sure what happened, but I am thinking mereks. He is better, but can't walk. I am not giving up on him yet. If he can figure out how to walk on one leg, he gets to stay.
He walks with his knees together i will try to get a pic of him when he stands. If it is Mareks will it spread to the rest of my flock and what can i do for him Is there a treatment for Mareks. Who knows of a good chicken vet around portland/bethpage/Gallatin areas.

Here is my list of what I am taking to the flea market Saturday

These are NEAR POL
1 Olive Egger with a straight comb, hubby called her snazzy looking LOL
3 SBEL
1 White EE, no beard
1 Black Copper Marans with split wing

These are about 3+ months
2 SBEL
1 SBEL with a straight comb, might still lay a blue egg
4+ Black Marans Type pullets, probably an Olive Egger cross that didn't get the pea comb
7-9 Black Easter Eggers

I also have 4 little black EE roos too. The blacks COULD be Lavender Splits, but I lost track so my loss.....
1 German NH roo with split wing..... he hatched in March.

If you see something you want and can make it, I will try and hold it, but you need to get there early..... I don't want to go home with chickens

I don't think there is any treatment, they are contaguious, but once they are over it they will pass resistance to chicks. It is usually fatal, very high mortality. You ALWAY need to isolate sick chicken just in case, plus the other will kill them if they are weak.
He isnt weak always first at feed time and pushes his way through the crowd he just looks like his legs hurt. and he is seperated from them and in my house again lol. Going to take him to the vet tomorrow.

I was just reading about a diseases that cause joint pain. One such is mycoplasma synoviae , its somewhat common and can cause staggering and joint pain. Antibodies to this disease can be detected in a blood test. It can sometimes be treated with antibiotics, though it may be difficult to completely cure. It can be transmitted to the rest of the flock, & individual birds may or may not show symptoms. There are other diseases that could cause " arthritis" like symptoms.
This was the only disease mentioned in the article. I hope this helps.

Matlock....you still out there? I need to know if you still want my Silkie roo. I know you have other things on your mind and I was planning to hold onto him until you got things back together but things changed this morning. He's starting to crow earlier and louder and I was worried about the neighbors so I went out to let them out of the coop and noticed he has attracted a young dog in the area. He was first on my front porch and then followed the sound around back. I shoooed (?) him away and he took off like a light but he may come back. The yard is fenced but I know they have their ways and while my dog pays no attention to him and the girls I don't want anything to happen like others on here have said happened to them. The girls don't make much noise....except for my talkative maran....but I really don't want him to start attracting unwanted friends. .......just let me know if you read this.

Cinny-
I am displaced for an undetermined amount of time. I had to get rid of all my chickens. All I have now is my 2 weenie dogs. I don't expect to be back "home" till at the very least next spring. I'm sorry, but you'll have to find another home for that roo. I didn't realize you were waiting on me, and I thought it was known I had to rehome my chickens. I'm so sorry...I'm in a rental house that's in city limits now, I can't have them.

I read a thread on here and a poor guy lost his WHOLE flock TWICE to MG... very bad stuff...... he HAD to cull EVERYTHING.... peacocks, turkeys, chickens, ducks........

The first time he bough some birds and introduced them without quarantine the second time.... he didn't know how he got it. He ordered NPIP eggs (they don't test for everything, just a couple of things) so it was a mystery to him. MG can be transmitted in eggs.
