hello mid tn. im still in the planning stages of getting chickens. but ill be looking to buy some this spring AFTER i build a coop/run. van buren county. anybody else near me. ide like to visit and look at your coop for idea's. for mine

ah, ok, now I get it...the standard IS feathered legs, and the ones without are considered to be at fault. Makes sense now as why there was emphasis placed on that quality. I was only thinking of how difficult the silkies were when dealing with free range birds with feathered legs, and thinking how much easier it would be on me if they did not have them. The one marans I have has no feathers and I am happy with it, but then again, I do not show...yet. Not saying I wont, as I remember from 4-H how much prep and pressure is involved. If I get some black english orpingtons to breed into lavender, then it might be worth looking into showing later though.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, as it makes perfect sense now.

Faults are different. A Fault on a Marans would be something like middle toe feathers points would be deducted. NO feathers is a Disqualification.

Once a breed is admitted to the SOP, I personally feel an obligation to try to breed to the standard. One thing most don't understand about the standard is, if you breed to the standard you breed a healthier bird and they should live longer. Things like back with and no pinched tails makes for more room for organs and better egg laying abilities... like not egg bound.

The only thing I don't like about the feathered legs is they get SO dirty when it rains here. And it has been raining a lot recently! I have the same problems with my Silkies - they just get so dirty compared to all our other breeds.

True....and ONCE I thought I'd give our Silkie a bath and clean her up, especially her legs......never had any idea how long it takes them to dry!!! Even using a hairdryer.

Saw this on a blog this morning and thought I'd post it. I know in the past people have wondered what kind of predator they were up against and maybe this would help identify them.

Last time we gave ours a bath we had to keep them inside overnight. They did look MUCH better for it though!
