The Middle Tennessee Thread

Hi, I saw the Middle TN thread and decided to hop on. We live in Clarksville, TN. close to Fort Campbell. Just started our little chicken family with 3 BR's and 1Mystery chick, hoping to add a few RIR to the batch this week.

Welcome to the thread, there's lots of good people here. Make yourself at home.

Thanks! I don't need enabling- I need sanity lol. We have 2 disabled children, a 10 month lab/husky mix, an 18lb cat, a squirrel (sorta a pet lol) and the 4 chicks.

Does anyone know where to get an accurate thermometer ? I swear I could have 27 of these things and they would all read something different

If you find one let me know.
My DH splurged $21 on the AcuRite w/ hydrometer, and after the 2 horrible hatches or non-hatches really,
it now appears the remote is completely wrong, as it is claiming 93F 1% rh when I have 3 other thermometers telling me the LG is holding steady at 100F. If it started out correct when we bought it, and has gotten progressively less accurate over the 2 hatches it was used for, that would pretty well explain well everything : (

Not sure we can help in that department.....

Welcome but I agree with dm rippy.

As in Welcome,
but sanity has certainly not been available around my place, esp. not the past 5 days...
I now have 30 mins to get the 2 new fluffy chicks I brought home today better setup for the night b/f I need to feed the 2 remaining piglets. Tomorrow around dawn its musical chickens w/ the pens, in order to make room for the Wonderful Jersey Giant Pullet currently snuggled on my front porch, oh & the Peacock who will be arriving just prior to ppl coming to look at piglets. My 2 housecats & 2 dogs are certain I have gone insane, & possibly also recently given birth to _something_ that gets feed warm milk!! The barncats goats & other pigs believe I've gone mia since they have only seen DH in several days.
Oh, & the surprize Guineas are starting to think talk of a real coop/pen was a lie, since they arrived into the temp. pen during an ice storm & approx. when the piglets did. So about this sanity concept, where did you say you bought that??

Oh, borrowed LG holding temps nicely since the electical came back on fri. so 41 eggs day 3 and counting ....

But the 60mph wind gusts blowing stuff all over outside is getting rather annoying, I'm afraid to even check the weather forecast right now since we got un-predicted snow most of Sat. . right now I vote all the animals and the weather just switch to decalf, calm down, & play nice for a few days at least!

Quote: That is odd, I have 2 and have been using them since I started hatching, they are accurate for the temp.... the humidity is off, but I think most of them are they is why you calibrate them. Have you changed the batteries? If it was not too long ago take it back and get another one...... Temps have never been an issue with mine.

I always use 2 thermometers. 1 is the thermostat and one is the AccuRite seems to work for me just fine. I have one that has the probe. I use the probe at the TOP of the bator and then I set the thermometer in the bottom so I can see both temps and the thermostat is in the middle that way I know the average is about right. In my hatcher the thermostat is at the top and then the little AccuRite is on the hatching baskets so I know what the temp is at the baskets.

I'm thinking this is a diff. model. It is the indoor/outdoor one. The remote (outdoor) part is about 4 inches long 1 inc thick 1.5 wide & one thing I noticed is that after awhile IT starts to get hot,
as in the batteries in it get hot to the touch & it starts reading ITSELF rather than the air temp. I figured this out on the 2nd , 0%hatch rate attempt. If DH had kept the receipt it would have gone back already (bought at Lowes in Dec, no packaging or anything now, of course the one thing that isn't still kicking around the house months later).

After carrying that thing around for 6wks playing human thermostat to the diy bator, I am now already a big fan of the LG & old school thermometers(glass type) & a metal meat/candy one.
I might try to find another digital but not exactly like this one.

Was yours from Wally world or a hardware store?

I don't find the other one.... but it is similar to this one. It keeps records of the Highs and lowest high and Lows and the Lowest lows.... you can reset all that, it keep a record of the humidity too. It has a probe connected to it and it keeps inside temps and outside.... I forget the humidity if it is inside or out.... anyway
