Hey guys, sorry I haven't been on. Nasty weather, Eh?
I lost a few young ones in the nasty weather sadly.. everything is frozen here..
I have been thinking hard the last few weeks, And I have decided I need to get rid of most of my birds, As much as I hate to. But I need to focus more on my future, and need to get a good runnin car..

I am really reluctant to even get rid of anything because I love them so much..
But if anyone is interested in the following, Please PM me.

Pair of Chocolate Wyandottes
Pair of Blue laced Red Wyandottes (Black Laced Red rooster and Splash hen)
2 blue laced red cockerals, turning out great.. One is extremely petified.

I am keeping my SLW and Silver Pencilled, can't bring myself to get rid of them, As they are my favorite.

Sent you a PM.

I am so glad the wet weather has turned sunny. It's cold but beautiful here.

Hello all! We are in the early stages pf planning our first coop. It was a difficult decision, but I think we have decided to go with Rhode Island Reds (somewhere around 8-10). I am interested in getting a small incubator and hatching some eggs as a learning expereince for my two small children. My grandmother bought an incubator for my 3rd grade class as a child, and it was a big event for us! I want them to have the same. Does anyone here know of a local (and reputable) source for fertilized RIR eggs? We are located in rural southern Warren County, but I don't mind driving to purchase them.

Also, the other breed we had looked at were Orpingtons. If I'm making a mistake with the Reds, please tell me so! We are mostly just wanting eggs, and plan to use a fixed coop/paddock method in our immediate (shady) backyard. It is surrounded by a pre-existing 5ft fence.

Thanks in advance!
Hey....and welcome! You will be so glad you joined the forum, there are a lot of backyard experts here and I've learned much from them since getting my chicks last April. I have a RIR....a Buff orphington and a Maran.....I will definately have to agree that the RIR is not the friendliest and you will want one that they kids can hold and love on. We raised her from a 2 day old chick and even that didn't make her "affectionate" She has never tried to peck or go after any of us, but she runs if we come near her and squacks like crazy if I pick her up. The Orphington is the most docile of the three, she's not one that's much for being held either but she's also at the bottom of the pecking order in our flock of 6 so that might have something to do with it. The Maran came from Donna and she will follow me around "talking" all day long. She's the first one to run to greet us, kids included, and she loves being held and sitting on your lap. On top of that she lays incredible chocolate brown eggs!! This is just from my experience but like others have said research first and make sure.....you might even decide on more than one breed, we have 6 all of them different and each chosen for different reasons and I love having the different ones but then I'm going to limit myself to 8-10 so I wanted variety......BTW, the kids favorite is by far the Silkie, she only gives small eggs but she's a good layer and loves the kids back. My grandson would never eat eggs until I told him that Pippa laid them just for him and now he eats 2 scrambled every weekend. Research breeds on My Pet Chicken and they will match chickens to your needs. Good luck and let us know what you decide!!

So good to see the sun......our chicks are all laying!! Now I am looking forward to getting more for the spring!!!!

Has anyone ordered from TSC? Do you know if there is a shipping charge??? I was about to order from a hatchery, but couldn't shell out the almost $20 shipping...that 8 more chicks I could get....lol

In moving birds yesterday I found I have a quad of Lavender Ams... they are 3 months old give or take a week or 2 either way. I am going to put them on CL if anyone is interested you can PM me. Probably going to sell all my Lavs/Split Ams flock in the late spring. I have 30 new chicks coming in a few weeks and I need to make room for the new birds too. The chicks are new Blacks and Lavs from Paul Smith. Same with my Wheaten Ams.... selling them about the same time... maybe a little later.
