The Middle Tennessee Thread

Yesterday we collected almost a dozen eggs! That's after only getting 2 the day before. I hoping that this long-long molting is finally wrapping up. My Cream Legbars that haven't laid in weeks finally laid one yesterday - and since it was the first egg in this cycle, it was such a gorgeous turquoisy-blue. The last ones they laid had gotten so pale, I'd forgotten what a beautiful color they could be!

I had knee surgery last week and have been recuperating. Old age is definitely not for sissies! I haven't been able to go out to coop since Wednesday. My hubby is taking care of the chickens for me - and he tells me all is well. Physical therapy is hard! Hopefully I can start driving again later this week after they take out the stitches.

The days are getting longer - and I love that! SOOOO looking forward to spring!

Donna - is your chocolate roo an orp? That would make some pretty chicks, I'll bet.

I had knee surgery a few years ago... still have a little trouble, but nothing like I did before surgery. I had a torn menis? and when they got in there my knee cap was on crooked so they had to STRETCH everything and take my knee cap off and put it back in the right spot. One thing I can tell you..... EXERCISE that knee NOW as much as you can stand. Stretch it have your hubby help you. Do your therapy as MUCH as you can. You will get better results if you do.

Nurse told me I could go back to work the Monday have surgery.... I don't know what planet she lived on but there was NO WAY that was going to happen. I took 2 weeks off from work since I had the surgery done before Christmas so that was the best time at work (A college) to take off. I still worked with an ice pack for weeks..... still have to use ice packs... my knee is swollen a little now.

Get better. Hope you have a FULL recovery.

I got 38 eggs yesterday. Still not at full productions. Less than 1/2 are laying in the back. I should get 15 more eggs a day from back there. And the SLW and BLRW are not laying either so that will be another 10 eggsish a day too.

Yes my Choc roo is an Orp. I also have Alex's Choc Wyandottes too.

My BBS Orps have finally started laying again after their molt! I am hoping my Buffs start laying soon. One is squatting.

I think you should get a BLRW... I adore mine. They are beautiful.

Also mine lay almost everyday.
Good suggestion.....I lost my SLW and miss her....we love the Wyandottes and this would be a perfect way to get a new one.

Well ladies....misery loves company.....I had a torn miniscus too and they did surgery for that but now my Grandmama's arthritis is kicking in and I'll probably have to have a knee replacement the beginning of summer......not looking forward to that but I am looking forward to walking without pain!! Besides, isn't this a good opportunity for the hubby and kids to wait on us for once!

I agree about the slw.... they are pretty but not the same as blrw. I prefer them too. I think they are better layers too and mine lay bigger eggs.

Yep - it was a badly torn meniscus. And how did I tear the meniscus? Out at the chicken coop - slipping on the wet ground right after Christmas. I'm following the doctor's orders and doing my physical therapy religiously! My husband and daughter handle a lot of workers comp cases, and they tell me that it's amazing the difference in patients who do the PT regularly and the ones who wimp out and say it's too hard or painful. The ones that push through do much, much better and heal more quickly, too. The doctor said knee replacement will likely be in my future in 5- 10- 15 years. Not a lot of cartilage left on that knee.

If anyone wants chicks THIS WEEK, there are a lot of breeds still available from Meyer Hatchery - some marans, easter eggers, Polish, SLW. Yes, they're hatchery, but if you're looking for eggs and pretty yard candy, they're a good deal. https://www.meyerhatchery.com/available_now.a5w

OK, I sort of saw it. My Eng Orp laid another egg today, I saw it in the pen

BUT the thing I sort of saw... someone mounted her too!

I heard a commotion and looked to see what was going on... I saw some movement and I saw her get up and shake it off LOL. The other roo in the pen is too young.. only 3-4 months old, not crowing and no red combs, SO I am sure it was the choc roo. The other roos in the other pen were not happy about it either LOL.

GUESS they are going in the bator
