Hey all I have a question..... My husband is wanting to "make our own chickens". Which is a YAY for me..I've been wanting to try it for awhile. Right now we have 41 eggs that have to go in lockdown today. I had a nightmare that i had 41 roos!!! But here is my question.

We want to set up breeding pens. We have 4 Roos...2 Buff Os, a black giant and a Cucko Maran... Hubby's wants to breed the BOs with red sex link...for egg laying abilities.... Any idea on what we will get?? What will they look like, is this a good idea, etc

Anne- thanks for the suggestion for the Kindle- I got one for Christmas and haven't been using it as much as I can obviously.
Glad to hear that your Dad is doing better. Love how you call it the BIG CRASH. Will have to come up with a good one for the stroke twins.
Came home last night to find out my Mom fell out of the front door and was on the porch when I was passing the house. Stopped and helped get her bandaged up and then while I stayed with her, Dad went to check on Granny- he scared her because she didn't hear him and she fell off the bed into the floor. It never rains...it pours.
I would love to get together and do lunch. Will have to be after the 1st of May though. Pick the place and time and let me know.

Lori I did a quick candle the other day and tossed 1, but 2-3 more were cracked

Tiny cracks, the chickens probably did it. I don't toss anything that early usually. I will take some batteries and look today and let you know.

I'm no expert I'm just making conversation But this is what I would think

Red Sex link is not a breed but a cross breed (New Hampshire Red / White Rock) so when you put Buff O in no telling what you get.... Sex link crosses are good for egg laying but they are a 1 yr chicken don't lay good the 2nd year.....Why raise cross breeds? Why not raise Pure Breeds something you will be proud of? If you want Sex Links breed Pure Barred Rocks and Pure Road Island Reds and cross them for Black Sex Links ../...When you get ready to sell some you have the 2 best sellers and a good sex link. It is more fun to take someone to the barn and show them your Pure Breed Chickens...

Get Breeds you like and you will enjoy going to feed them
Bantam are nice and the eggs are good but small and the chicks sell good. I have Barred Rock Bantams,Nankins,Silkies,Wheaton Old English, and BBRed Modern Game... I enjoy going to the barn to feed

Well I guess I talked enough.

Quote: It is AWESOME for those of us that read a lot. My budget can't keep up with my reading. I love going to the library, but always run out of time. Plus I NEVER get books back in a timely fashion. The online library doesn't have as many books as the regular one, but I haven't run out of options yet. It's harder to browse, but totally worth it in ease of checking books out.

You do have to have an Amazon account. You actually download them through your Amazon Kindle account. You can turn them in that way too if you finish one early. Amazon has tons of freebies, but it is hit or miss. I've read some that are great and others that stink. You can now self publish through Amazon and there are no editors saying yay or nay so all kinds of stuff gets put out there. But hey, it's free.
Amazon also does Prime memberships for about $80 a year. With Prime you get one free checkout of a best seller per month. You also get access to all kinds of videos and TV shows. Plus you get free two day shipping (awesome for procrastinators like me!). I have not been terribly impressed by the TV/movie selections, but then again, I'm not really a TV/movie kind of girl. I'd rather read.

Sooooo... now we have corrupted you all and you will do nothing but sit around reading and playing with chickens. :)

I am really not wanting to sell chickens, we sell the eggs. I have no problem having mixed breeds... I think they make some of the best looking birds..

Thanks

Wife89. I would put the Marian roo over whatever hens you have. That way the dark egg gene gets passed on. If you just want mixed breeds it will be good to hav them laying those dark eggs that everyone goes crazy over! I agree some of the prettiest cooks I've seen have been crosses. But then again there are a few pure breeds that allow you to have that wonderful variety,Icelandics,ee, are just a couple. With them you can have all the color in the world and still be a purebred breeder. Just say in! Lol
