Thanks to a trip to Donna we now have our long awaited Olive Egger.....named Olive, of course....Stinker has been rubbing up on her and showed her how to eat out of the feeder, the other two don't pay much attention yet. Actually Stinker the Salmon Faverole is the one I was most worried about, she lives up to her name and causes all the trouble. DMRippy.....better known to us all as Donna .....has a great selection of chicks and pullets and even roosters, beautiful birds! If you need anything at all you should PM her....she knows her chickens....LOL
I agree! My EE from her is beautiful!

Here is a pic of a brahma when younger and a pic of the cochins. I'll do a pair of brahmas - they are currently 7 weeks - the cochins are older at about a year. Is that too old?

Sorry for the delayed reply - getting company on Wednesday and then going out of town so cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. Actually I've had such bad luck with having too many roosters that I'd rather not take any rocks (thought I want some someday) unless I could know they're going to be hens. I'm actually willing to give you a pair of Brahmas because I just don't have the room for all these roosters. This chicken stuff is hard work . . . my white silkie just hatched another chick (I think its a cochin). I don't do anything on a grand scale, just a backyard hobby chicken owner. I understand you're north of Cookeville? I'm in Monterey and will likely be in town (Cookeville) on Wednesday if that would work. Otherwise if you want to come and pick out your pair, I'm home all day (cleaning) if you wanted to make it out here. Let me know.

Y'all are making blush......

Yes i have more olive egger pullets. I have some crosses that have straight combs not sure what color egg they will lay but not as likely to be olive. I have some older pullets. She was looking for a certain age so it was not as easy to fine a pullet. I think we say a couple that were about 3 months old. Just pm me if you want more info.

I really hate this stupid phone sometimes.

This is a trick used for birds raiding a garden but it may throw off a hawk too. You know all those useless CDs that you got as advertisements? or just don't play right anymore? Hang them on strings so the wind can blow them. The sunlight will flash on the surface and throw reflections all around. It is hard to keep focused on a target and navigate when you are getting flashes of light in your eyes.
Well, this morning I went out a little later than normal to let my chickens out to range. 7:30 instead of 6:30. That hawk was fling back in forth in front of my coop screaming. so I guess the spider didn't work. I also have silver mylar wind socks hanging off the edge of the coop and off a power pole in the yard. That didn't stop him. Next I guess is an owl or eagle to move around out there. My stupid corgi was so excited with all the noise It went after my rooster instead of chasing the hawk. Looks like I need a new training collar :/ My poor roosters tail is going to take a while to grew back new feathers! The problem is I live between 2 heavy treed ridges. So the sun isn't in my yard till around 9am. He does his dirty work before the sun is over the yard. So shiney things don't work well. I thought about an eagle cry noise maker. Like they use at malls and billboards. But it may make my chickens crazy LOL I'm going to blow up that 6' snake and put it on top of the coop next see if that works! Beside being against the law, I don't think killing it would do any good. We have so many here another would just take it's place. Soooo, I will just have to keep the little ones out of harms way till they are too big to get. They don't bother with the adults just the young ones.

I have bantams and learned the hard way here in Murfreesboro the hawks are fierce. I lost at least two of my favorite older girls. Between hawks, neighborhood dogs, and foxes I've had to rethink how to protect my chickens. Now they live in a wooden shed converted to a coop that can be locked up completely at night with a six foot fence around their run and netting over the whole thing. ;)

Maybe a paintball gun would work for the hawk as well as the dog. At least it is non-leathal. To bad a super-soaker probably doesn't have the range you'd need. Maybe a potato gun if you can find one. They are driven by air like the paintballs but shoot potato pellets. You might even try a llama. I have a friend in Colorado that her llama (who guarded her sheep) rescued one of her hens from an eagle by spitting on it and made it drop the hen.

Thank y'all so much for your help and knowledge! I think I'll just call the cities/towns we're looking at and see what info I can get. Unfortunately, we can't buy a house yet so we don't plan on having help from a realtor. Right now we're looking at a house for rent in White House. Sure hope we get it and that White House allows backyard chickens; That way, when we do buy a house we can stay in the same town. Probably won't be able to have chickens until we can buy a house but I sure do enjoy learning from everybody here while I wait! I even have a chicken tractor picked out that my dad's gonna help us build. I've been researching all the different types of chickens and have made a list of ones I'm interested in learning more about, etc. I can spend hours on here reading and learning. LOVE BYC.com!!

got this little guy/girl yesterday and is in quarentine at the moment but they guy said this is a Blue double laced barn belder. suposed to be a rooster, he said it looked like one but i think it looks like a hen but it might just be me.

Just want to clarify......you cant do ANYTHING to hawks.......it is a felony with huge fines.

Well, true. I have no wish to hurt them just discourage them. I think it would be pretty difficult to prove if I was shooting at them with a potato gun. Of course if you know what time the hawk shows up (like before 8am) you might just fire off about 5 or 6 bottle rockets into the air before letting the chickens out. As long as it isn't too dry that is legal in many of the counties in Mid TN. You wouldn't aim them at the hawk, just shoot them off to make noise that will disturb his hunting pattern.
