I have a rooster that had a mite issue. I have never had this issue before. I have cleaned and threaded the coop and everything and dusted him with DE two seperate days. The mites have been significantly reduced, but there are still noticeable some around his head. He is a silkie mix so he is quite fluffy up there. What is the safest way to kill the mites on his head? Thanks!

I'm sure someone with more experience with this problem will respond but I wouldn't see a problem trying Sevens Dust. I've used it on our pets before for fleas with success.

I. would try sevin dust or spray. you can also use ivermectin.

We use Adams Flea and Tick on our Silkies.

Are you using cedar? If so, switch to regular pine right away.

I think your Dumplin is not a Leghorn. They are a light weight laying machine. Large in the tall sense not in the round sense.

Make sure you grumpy hen isn't eggbound. Check to see if something is out of order in your chicken house. I am a newby at chickens myself but I have raised sheep for fifteen years and certain individuals at times take on leadership roles for the flock. I had the ewe, Mableline who would come and baa at me stridently if someone stuck their head in the fence, or they needed new water, or there was a lamb or goat kid (not her own) who was shouting for it's mother and mom wasn't answering. Some of her daughters and granddaughters do similar things like telling me when the water needs refilling. Make sure that you don't have a snake prowling around or a coon. She may be trying to communicate the only way she knows how that something is very wrong.

I have an old cat (he's 17) About five years ago he was following me around making me crazy with his meowing night and day. I would be working outside in the garden and he would come up in line of my vision and piss. It took me 3 days for it to sink into my brain what I was seeing. He was trying to piss and only getting drops out and then he would meow loudly. DUH! He had kidney stones! I real quickly dosed him with cranberry juice and got him some special feed for urinary health and in about a month he was right as rain.

I cannot determine for sure what is going on. I have looked and checked out everything I can. The dog has recently killed 3 opossums. She bit me and attacked again Thursday so I took off my pink crocks and stepped away and sure enough, she left me alone and went for the shoes! Who knew? So, no more pink crocks to the coop for me. Still have not had an egg but we do not know her age. Could be just she is getting too old to lay. She was given to us as one of a pair that a man was culling his flock. The other has never laid an egg for us. Son cleaned the coop yesterday and put in new bedding and dusted it well with Seven dust since we have been seeing a few beetles around and in the coop in the past few days. We have gotten a little spoiled getting a fresh egg from her and I had to buy store eggs....blech. Works I guess but I have fallen in love with the flavor of fresh eggs. Going to raid my cousin's supply of eggs I think! lol

So yesterday we went to pick up a dining table and chairs from an ad on Craigslist and when we were talking to Lindsay who was giving away the table, we find out they also have chickens in their backyard and are on BYC! We then had to go out back and see the tractor and their chickens. Such a great couple. Thanks so much for the dining set! Nice to meet you as well.

Would you like a breeding trio of Olive eggers? I have Americana/Maran Olive eggers and I am only going to keep two girls no roos. One of them should start to lay by August. The younger by September. They are about 3 weeks apart.
This is Chicken Little because everything scares her but she if very sweet.

This one is much calmer and is who Little runs to when she is scared. I haven't really named her. The glow of my screen makes them look bluer than they are. They are actually charcoal gray with black lacing in sunlight.

She has just about lost all the baby white on her throat now. These are from almost 3 weeks ago.

This is Peregrine because he is colored like that kind of hawk and has a noble bearing.

He is a quiet kind roo. Always respectful of the others i.e. not pushy or shovey or running over the top of anyone. He hasn't crowed yet.

I have two other roos one is just mean and will be going in the freezer. The other is black and is the same age as Chicken Little. I haven't named him either. I'd take $25 for the trio.
