I haven't been on for about 30 pages worth of comments- WOW! A lot to catch up on! I wanted to tell everyone thank you so much for your kind words about my daughter. Shortly after I posted she became very ill and was transported to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, where she was diagnosed with an extremely rare neurological disorder. We started a medicine trial and she is once again doing well. She's happiest when in our backyard chasing chickens and getting dirty from head to toe.
Sorry to hear your little one is sick. I am happy she is getting better. Sick children are heart breaking, but then they are good at showing us what is really important in life! Puppy kisses and soft baby chicks are what make kids of all ages happy Good luck.

Melissa......God bless her! She's a beautiful little girl and I will keep you all in my prayers......I have a Grandson who has Autism, and playing and taking care of chickens is very therapeutic for him also. Keep us posted.

I can't imagine how difficult it must be to see your child suffering with an illness. I'm so glad she is doing well with her new medicine. Chicken therapy rocks!

A snake got in our coop yesterday. My husband killed it but it got one of our sebright chicks. Momma silkie was able to hide the rest by standing like a statue outside in the pouring rain with 4 little chicks under her. It was amazing. I couldn't see any chicks until she saw me & relaxed and all of a sudden these little heads started poking out of her soaked feathers. It also caused a young rooster to get hurt. Not sure how that happened. Maybe he was bitten or maybe just trampled or something but he can barely move now. Can't get up to eat or drink. :(

Thank you. My poor little roo just passed. I think it was for the best he wasn't able to even eat or drink by himself. I had gotten him dried out and brought him in to recuperate but I think it was just too much for him.

Your hen will probably do most of the work for you. My silkie is doing a great job and this is her first batch of eggs. You may want to give mom and babies a separate place from the rest of your flock while they're this small. I like adding vits or the electrolyte packs to water for brand new chicks and new moms too. Mom will keep them warm so you don't need a light. Momma chickens are great!

I feel like a little kid I got über excited when I saw a little beak from under her feathers lol. I will run up to TSC and get the electrolyte stuff. Only thing is the chicks can't get out of the nesting box should I put a dif one in there?
