The Middle Tennessee Thread

Buying a used shed and modifying it to work my be your best option. I am almost done with my 8x8 pallet coop build, I went last night & spent 165.00 on the stuff ( 2x4's & metal) to do my roof. If I had bought all the wood for this coop it would have cost me over 800.00. I do plan to have this one insured for around 2000.00 that way if something happens I'll build me the mega coop to beat all coops.

Hey ya'll

We just got the great news that we close on our house next week and at the top of the list of what we want is CHICKENS :D

So to my middle TN peeps.......where can I get a decent coop at a decent price? Is it cheaper to build one? Where are the best breeders for chicks? We're in Mcminnville bw

It is cheeper to build one ... I figure $100 labor when I build one ...I have one I built for my self It is too big for me so I will sell for $250 It is 4' X 10' 4 nest box 2 roost poles....come see...

If anyone is looking for Guineas, I have some for sale. I am in Giles County.. pick up only.. also have white crested black polish golden lace polish, and buff laced polish, that I hatched from eggs. Also have 3 Millie Fleur D'uccle's 2 hens 1 rooster. White silkies all are PET QUALITY. I have ordered eggs and need to make room for the chickens that I really want.

I might have some started birds available in a few weeks. Downsizing a bit...probably have Marans, Orps, Ameraucanas....and some black English Orp roosters.
I was going to sell off most of the boys, but my old neighbors that run their mule 4 x 4 from dusk til dawn just moved back. I may keep all the boys close to the property line just to drown out the sound of the sickening exhaust choking all day long. All day. Every day. All flipping day long.

I am an hour from McMinnville, BTW. I used to go to BRC on Depot St for lumber all the time. Maybe we will again if the Chattanooga Market sales go well, then I could deliver chickens :)

Ok so why flat, I know not flat is more powerful. Like it'll eat the acid off a battery, cleans the heck out of a windshield, I'm told it will dissolve the shell of an egg- it takes some time. I'm guessing just to powerful, or the birds don't take the fizz to well.

The fizz is not good for them. My husband grew up in Norfolk, VA and as a kid was told if the sea gulls were to eat an Alkeseltzer tablet that they would explode. So being a curious boy he threw one out to one. And sure enough it blew the bird up and killed it. He was so shocked that he went and said a lot of Hail Mary's though he never told the priest about it. Now a fizzy Coke would not have as much concentrated CO2 as a Alkeseltzer but birds can't belch and it is not good to trap any gas inside of them.

this is our fatty named Dumplin' We were told she is a leghorn. After some questions, many said that leghorns are not fat birds so what do you think she is? Sorry for one pic at a time but I have tried to upload these pics for two days and it will not let me post more than one pic per post. Her legs are straight...don't look like it in this pic but she was turning to waddle away from me when I made the pic

She looks like a Cornish cross. If she has good legs then she is in the minority for her breed. Most are breed so heavy that if they are not butchered by the time they are grown then they are lame. She is probably a lightweight for her breed type. If you want to breed chicks from her don't use a heavy rooster or the chicks will have leg problems. A lightweight rooster should keep the chicks from being too heavy.

Well i made some progress on the coop, I got the roof on in about 2 hours today. I placed one of the post on the porch I need to find another one. The one I had planed to use was to short. I still have to put my final siding on , trim corners, Windows & doors. Move the fence & put up bird netting.
