The Middle Tennessee Thread

We've got some new fluffy-butts in mid tn! If it's too much to read, ignore the long post and admire the chicks in all their fuzzy cuteness.

I want Turkey's....hubby saw a show last night about this guy that raised wild turkeys.......he was a bit off his rocker BTW. I think he will relent when we move to the farm. I sooooooo want my own turkey for thanksgiving.

I think it'll be really good for my kids to see where the turkey they ate last night comes from but after seeing it myself, I thought it'd be a better learning experience to raise our own. We want 2 toms and a hen.

I remember when I was a kid my dad went down that road. The turkeys went wild on him and took over my tree house. Good times.

Donna I'm feeling better, still have that lingering cough. May have to force myself to drink some warm bourbon. Glad to hear you got the hatcher moved. Did your son say " where the heck did you get this ?" Let me know how it works. Post pics they'll have to do till I can come out. Oh I went to the coop yesterday to feed etc. The small silkie was dead, she had been fine just the day before. She never roosted with the rest , always on a threshold board. I wondered if she just got to cold. Still no eggs, its been a month & 1/2. They birds are beginning to look like dumplins

Professor Eagleton didn't make it. I dewormed her twice since September and I keep DE in the coop all the time. She just wouldn't her food. Just bread and meat but not enough of that, I guess. This all started when the neighbors dog killed her sister. Is it possible she was depressed????? I buried her next to her sister just in case that was the situation. =(

Now, my RIR (who is SO mean to other chickens but the nicest chicken to people) is all alone and is trying to be friends with the other flock who are terrified of her because she likes to stand on thier backs and peck thier heads. I feel bad for her though because her only friend is gone and she's all alone now. I wish she had someone to cuddle with, especially with this cold weather coming up. What do I do to get her to accept new pullets? I have some silkie/houdan mutts that I hatched out two months ago and I was thinking of getting some good egg producing pullets of some sort to stick in with her but I don't want her to hurt them. I'm wondering if she would be more accepting of new birds now that she's lonely. The coop is big enough for 10 hens and the run attached is 8x10 so there's plenty of room.

Yes it is possible for birds to pine away for a lost mate or friend. I lost a goose to pining when her gander was killed by a car. (Gander was asleep in my double wide drive and some 4$$ left the road to run him over as he slept.)
