The Middle Tennessee Thread

I have an egg customer who wants some chickens for his grandson. He said white chicken, brown egg layer. I can only think of the following breeds: White Rock, White Jersey Giant, Rhode Island White, and White Wyandotte. Am I missing any? I am going to call him back and get more details; he left a message earlier. I don't own white chickens besides silkies b/c the hawks love them too much.

Hey, y'all!
I have three barred rocks that are at point of lay (at least one is already laying, possibly all three). I got these as chicks last year to raise up to sell. They are the last three. I've had three people now want them and then not show up. Arg. I've put them on Craigslist too, but if anyone needs hatchery barred rocks that are 6 months old and laying let me know. I need to empty that pen out!

Thanks!

Where are you located?

I am in need of advice. I am building a chicken palace. I got some cedar for an interior wall. Last night I read cedar is poison for chickens to breath. Do I need to take the wall down? I'm not going to use any more of it since I read that unless it is outside. I know old barns are made of cedar around here. What is yall's experience with cedar and chickens?

Chickens are notorious for respiratory issues. Most of the time when folks are talking about the dangers of cedar they are talking about using shavings with chicks. Prolonged exposure to the essential oils from the cedar could be harmful. I would seriously doubt that one wall of your barn will be a problem for your birds. If you are worried about it, just slap a coating of sealant on it to prevent the fumes.

Look into Delaware and Langshan.

I didn't get to work on the brooder as much as I wanted. I had an unexpected influx of orders that took about 2-3 hours to pack. We did get a second section almost done.... just need to add hardware cloth. TOMORROW will be all BROODER work.
