That's about what we are doing in our chick house but ours will be custom built in's without the arch top so we can have several high..that arch is a space killer.
Now,if it quits raining on the weekends so we can get them done and the chicks out of the rabbit cages

I'm going to have more chicks heading out there soon

Sorry CluckyJay - had no idea they cost THAT much! Just heard good things about them.

I'll post over on the pest page also, but just a quick question - found lice on one chicken today, gobs of eggs on feathers by her vent. Dusted everyone with Sevin for now. Doing research on what to do from here but I'm sure there'll be some eggs out there (if it ever stops raining). Is there a time period where we can't eat the eggs after using Sevin? Acckkk! There's still so much to learn - could somebody just mix up a batch of chicken tips and pour them in my head or something?

No problem! I found a breeder around here that told me I can probably find a young cow for around $800.00. That sounds more like it.

Thanks! I am reading up about the bulldog and water baby traits. I am thinking maybe miniature Jerseys instead of Dexters though. (Love that butterfat!) Researching, research, research!

The last straw with wanting my own milk cow came when I decided to make an Italian cream cake, hehe. Good LORD!

Imagine all the delicious milk products. CHEESE ya'll, REAL cheese. Super sharp cheddar, cream cheese, yogurt and kefir. YUM!

Man, those are pretty buff orphs. That was a breed I wanted. So perfect-looking! Are they as great as I read about? lol

What about using food-grade D.E on the chickens?

Hey Clucky - until you get yer heifer and enough milk to start making cheese -
The Amish do not use chemicals on their land nor their animals. Herds have often been in the community for generations back so they haven't been contaminated with outside sources, either. So Amish cheese is very clean.

Up in Muddy Pond, Tn (15 min off exit 300 of I-40) is the Muddy Pond General Store where they sell Troyer and Heini Amish cheese! If you buy uncut blocks the cost can be as low as $2.59 for Yogurt cheese, I think the most expensive I got was Smoked cheddar at $4.39. I share the ride with someone and we split gas, take orders for other friends who also chip in; buy in bulk and repackage with Seal a Meal, freezing some hard cheese. I leave some in the original wrap and it'll keep for another month. I could conceivable make it last 3 - 5 months!

Hard to beat the price - and the taste..........

The green onion or garlic herb is my all time favorite. Excuse me, snack time!!!

Cheese lasts you a month.

I think my momma went to Muddy Pond with her friend and ate some cheese from a store. Bet it was the same store! I may want to get in on that cheese trip sometime, lol. Is that price for a LB? Green onion cheese :O. Yummy!

Cluck I won't be going up there for another couple months (just went yesterday). Sides, you live closer! Bet it's only 40 min or so for you.

Cheese the way God intended is wonderful and nutritious! The c**p they sell in groceries today is not!!!Loaded with hormones which cause all sorts of problems, from acne to diabetes to menopause issues. I refuse to eat it if it ain't organic (and safe)! Makes eating out difficult but oh well, I'm worth it.

How's everyone else doing rain wise? We've got a lot; the creek got up there but then the rain slacked off. I'm praying we won't have problems this time.

Oops - forgot to add that those prices are indeed per pound.....if you buy an uncut block or wedge. It's about 70 cents higher for cut sections.

And the only reason it last so long here is that I buy large amounts (7# farmers cheese, 10# cheddar, 5# smoked cheddar, etc).
