When it stops raining I will get a picture of Moron...kids name the roos
big_smile.png
I will without a doubt sell one of the roos either one is fine with me.I like the Marans but they are just not the one's I get up for every morning...was saying I need to sell some of them last week before the car got cranky
Oh something good besides it's my little Mans 6th Birthday today

Holly - so sorry about your car problem and the adventures of driving like that. I know that was nerve racking, glad your home safe now. though probably stuck at home until you fix those sensors. I am starting to really dislike newer cars that have sensors. But the old cars are to bad on gas ... just can't win if you want a car.

Jenski - wow good for you for doing all that exterior cleaning. My white horse fence needs some scrubbing ... but I just don't have a spare moment (actually it's probably a full 2 day chore). Now I'm really tired just thinking about all the work you did. Hmmmm I need b-12 shots to keep up with you all *smile*.

I snuck two more tiny eggs in the bator , each hen laid me another egg. I can't wait to candle them, though because they are so dang small this is going to be very interesting.

Did I tell you all have much I LOVE 'habitat for humanity resale stores' ? They are AWESOME. I bought to windows that I am going to put on the bantam coop - $2.00 each. That's way better then the $78.00 for new ones at home depot. The store in wilson county is off East main st. They have tons of re-used building /home stuff. I bought two cabinet doors that I can use for the coop doors ( $1 each).

The guienea keets are getting so big, and goofy looking compared to a chicken. There necks seem so long. I love watching the process of the fuzzy butts to full grown chicks.

did someone (holly) say it's raining out - again? I'm hidden in a cubie all day and don't see day so I have no idea what's going on outside until quitting time 5-6pm. Guess I'll work on the coop walls in the workshop tonight. I bought four forsythia plants and guess I can plant those in the rain if there is any daylight by time I get home. Ahhh so much to do.

Ah we were hoping it was the sensor..cheap easy fix but those that know me know when I do something I do it good...no half way for me..I killed the transmission and it's one of those cute foreign ones that costs more than many used cars

Paul's thinking about re-building it but the part inside I did in is not cheap then the rebuild kit and converter not to mention the hours to rebuild it and put it back in...

going to have to dip into my "the economy sucks" account which I don't like but I need my car back. I'm not stranded since we own several but my jeep likes gas and I like my money so we are at odds

That habitat store is super when you can't get that stuff free

most often people pay us to take windows and doors even wood. I have quite the collection but strangely when we did our chick house we framed the doors then looked to see what we had "in stock" so my front door on the Chick house is rather elaborate for a chicken house..they don't seem to care though.
Baby pictures coming soon...2 brooders full of cute fluff and a chick in the bator chirping.

Have I told you all how much I enjoy your banter? Well ~ I do!

My girls and I aren't quite as interesting, but perhaps one day.

Ya know, we have the freeze/frost warning in our area tonight. Should I do anything extra for them since they've gotten used to warmer nights? Citygirls trick of hot water jugs or such?

Going to spend 30 min covering everything tonight as I've got lots of fruit/ornamentals in bloom right now. Sheesh! Then my friend reminded me that we still have blackberry and dogwood winters to get thru.

Thankfully the only food plants in the ground now are frost hardy. Last year I learned how to 'ferment' instead of canning and LOVED IT! Much less prep, no hot stove, no lifting of hot jars (can't do b/c of back issues) and the stuff tastes awesome. So I'm planting lots of things besides cukes to do up this year. The girls loved the fermented veggies last year - but I hadn't made enough to really share with them often. This year I'm hoping to have some for us, the hens, and the two sweet little ladies I help out.

Artie has been officially released and is back with her girls!! Those tail feathers perked right up when she was back with the other hens. I guess I never thought that hens were social creatures but mine sure seem to be.

Not looking forward to the next few days though. Was just getting used to the warm spring weather!

HBuehler - Sorry to hear about the car issues!!

Sigh. The frost is my fault. I put 50 bare root strawberry plants in the ground last week. That is why we are getting a frost tonight.

Just popping in to say hey! I've been working like crazy this week and have had little time with BYC and the chickies. The babies in the house all have wings now and are flapping around like mad in there. It will soon be time to move them outside. They are getting dusty and stinky!. The red sex links and barred rocks from the co-op are insanely friendly. I have to block the brooder door when I go chat with them to keep them from escaping to explore the house. I did realize last night that I have a little EE with a cross beak.

I guess I need to figure out how to euthanize her poor little self.

Everything else is swinging along. I haven't been posting much, but I do love bopping in to see what you are all up to.

Do we still want to do a get together on April 2nd?

Believe would you elaborate on the fermenting,I have never heard of that!
Had a turken bantam hatch today. Perfect hatch, she had twelve eggs and hatched them all! Makes the total around 73 now !they are so much fun to watch!
Brrr this cold is awful,I was liking that nice spring weather.

Okla - what in the world will you do with 73? Really! I'd love to know!
Obviously I'm still a newbie as the thought of that many dependents scares the you-know-what out of me!

Now to fermenting!

100 yrs ago our grannies didn't can stuff like we do today. Yet they were able to preserve their summer gardens to last thru the winters, when fresh foods were unavailable. Also, if you study epidemiology you'll note that the death rate, for those who survived infancy (since doctors didn't wash their hands) and epidemics (since germs were unknown) was in the high 80's to low 90's! Folks not only lived LONGER, but they were often healthier than we are in our 60's now!

Course, they didn't have tons of pharmacuetical drugs (good) and were way more active (good), but also they fermented foods which is REALLY good! There are good and bad bacteria in our bodies. When you deplete the good (lactic acid is one) then it lets the bad grow unchecked, which is bad.

Fermenting veggies not only preserves them easily, but it does it thru the use of the good bacteria, which then help our body to work like God intended in the first place! It's way more simple then canning, and extremely tasty. I bought the book, Making Sauerkraut (http://www.amazon.com/Making-Sauerk...1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301013289&sr=1-1-fkmr1) and tried some of those recipes, as well as some from other books. The one on page 22 was the winner! I preserved cucumbers, onions, yellow squash, garlic, beets, and they were so tasty!
Way better than pickles in vinegar! Good for you, too! There are some sites with info on doing this that I used and loved http://www.mothering.com/community/forum/thread/426207/how-about-a-fermented-veggies-thread
http://www.wildfermentation.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=5

I
swear I would sometimes wake up thinking about drinking the juice from my jars cuz it was like my body was telling me what I needed. I volunteer with the Cannon Cty Senior Center and help 2 little ladies - one bout freaked out when I took her a jar, saying it was like what her momma had made and she had drained the quart jar in a couple days. Said she'd not felt "perkier" in many years. She's already on me to make more and I haven't even started the seeds yet!

I love the concept of less work, more nutrition! The girls loved the leftovers and fermented pickles I gave them. So I guess I'll be fixing for a bunch this year!

Believer - thank you for the fermenting info. It definately looks like something I'll try! We plant a garden every year (which seems to just get bigger and bigger) and I'm always looking for new ways to store veggies.

CityGirl - would love to try to meet everyone on April 2!
