I have to go finish working on a slideshow for my niece's 16th birthday, but I just had a thought for CityGirl earlier this morning - - CityGirl, keep an eye on your bumblefoot roo's condition. Staph has a nasty way of migrating into bones and joints, and bumblefoot has a very high mortality rate. I am finding the after care for the foot "surgery" is more hassle than the surgery, but we are now at the dry stage at least. I am keeping Blu-Kote on my hen's foot just to keep some sort of antiseptic on the surface. I also replaced the ramp to the coop, since I think it was the culprit. We now have a nice, gently sloped ramp with a rubber mat stuck to the surface for traction. No wooden steps.

Hello all! I'm new here, in Murfreesboro.

Kept a few chickens years ago, but am ready to get a few more to share the experience with my young children.

Do any of you know how to go about getting small numbers of pullets? We'd like to start of with 6-10, but of course hatcheries have the 25 minimum....

We'd like some Easter Eggers for sure, and at least two other very friendly standard size breeds.

Hi, Tracy! Welcome to the Middle TN thread. The local BYCers are an AWESOME bunch and are loads of fun. Plus we are rampant enablers and will encourage your every chickeny whim.

Pretty good odds that the local folks can hook you up with everything you need. I have a herd of 7 week old EEs, barred rocks and red sexlinks in my grow out pen. All of the Barreds and sex links are girls (they came from the local co-op). I know I have three black EE girls out there and three barred EE boys. There are two blue EEs who are likely boys as well. They are so pretty that I am hoping against hope that they are girls, but I'm pretty sure the genetics are against me.

Sigh. At any rate, most all of them are for sale or will be eventually. I had thought to grow them to point of lay, but will happily sell them to you at this age if you want to start young. The barred rocks are stupidly friendly, with the sex links running a close second. The EEs are a little more stand-offish, but I have been bribing them with treats from early days, so they can all be convinced to come near for food.
At any rate, PM me if you are interested. I can hook you up.

Other than my lot, I know Hbuehler on here has lots of fun breeds going. She hatches constantly, so always has interesting things for sale. A ton of us have silkies (and will happily suck you into the silkie madness). Simplysplendidsilkies also has showgirls. Gosh, I forget what else we all have. Y'all speak up and remind me!

Hi folks,
My name is Sam and I am from White Bluff, TN. I just found this thread this morning and wanted to subscribe to become part of a network of local or semi local "chickeneers". I look forward to gaining knowledge as I am new to having chickens. I have an assortment of 16 that I got from TSC this spring. They are 7 weeks old and I'm letting them free range now. They are doing very well.
Right now my plan is just to grow them to laying age, then I am going to separate them by breed and incubate the eggs to produce purebreds. I have a trio of speckled sussex(which I love), a pair of anconas, and a pair of buff orps, I have 4 asst bantams that consist of 1 cochin, 2 seabrights, and 1 feather legged pure white one that I can't identify.
My plan is to build my own incubator while they are growing, and maybe do a test hatch before they start laying.
Do any of you incubate with home made bators?

Welcome, Sam! This is a great group to play with. Most of us incubate like crazy!!

I use a Genesis Hovabator for hatching so I can't help you out on the homemade bator. I do know that there are a ton on threads about the home grown variety. Have you done a search yet? A lot of people on BYC have done it. Good luck!!

matlock585 sounds like your already having fun with your chicks.You will love the Sussex we have never had speckled but Buff's but they are so mellow.
Tracyree I do hatch non stop..usually but I'm going away for a few days and are turning the bators off for just a few days..they will be back cooking soon..I can't help myself
I only sell chicks straight run though.Pullets will be for sale later in the Summer...as started birds. I have a few older pullets available now-Wheaten Ameraucana-clean faced so I can't use her but she's beautiful and a real pretty EE pullet-both are 4-6 months old. I hatch EE in the winter unless someone wants some and will take all that hatches.
My bators are chirping like crazy today...a great hatch and so many fluffy butts to play with

next hatch is tomorrow.
Large Fowl breeds are:
Ameraucana- Wheaten/Blue Wheaten..these are the true Ameraucana not EE
Blue Laced Red Wyandotte-Eye candy super gentle love people and even lay eggs for breakfast as a bonus.
Black/Blue Copper French Marans
Bantam breeds are:
Cochin-Solid Blue and Black,Mottled Blue and Black, Mille Fleur.Most are Show Stock/SQ other than the MF which no one really has that level yet.
Ameraucana-the true Mini version in Blue Black and Splash

And my Mothers Day present arrived late the other night so I was at the PO at 6AM getting them...It was worse than one of those annoying toys without an off button inside the box...all you could hear in there was Err ERRR ERRRRRR Have to see if I can get this stupid satellite to beam up a picture...I can't hardly get on the internet so not much hope there but he is one beautiful Roo..and the hen isn't bad

So far as the problem in there, I lowered the roosts and that seems to have fixed alll the problems. I think those heavy birds just had issues hoping up on the high roosts.
