I am so aggravated - another problem with a hen today; hopefully nothing major. Scarlett may be molting! In the spring! Right as I wormed with the wormer that says it "may cause deformity in new feathers so don't use during molt"!!!

Gave them the Safe Guard this morning. Everyone was eating/preening/moving about normally. Was gone till mid afternoon. I noticed a bunch of feathers in the coop as I was cleaning it this morning, hoped it was nothing. This afternoon there's more feathers in the pen. Thought they looked like Scarletts coloration. Picked her up and she is missing a bunch of feathers from her head, around her face, and the front of the neck above the crop area.

There is skin showing on head/face. Looks like pin feathers coming in under the others. Is a spring molt possible?

Last Aug Scarlett was attacked, lost all the feathers from her belly, rump, lower back and one leg. Grew them back by the end of Sept. Never did molt after that. Could this just be a delayed molt? If not, what other problems could we be looking at and how do I determine which it is?

No obvious mites/lice, all other body parts seem to be fine (resp, eyes, breathing, eating, etc) but she is one of the two who have had watery poo's the last couple weeks.

I tried to take a pic, but the batter was dead. Could post one tomorrow if that'll help. Tis nearly dark now.

Sunday afternoon works fine for me~ Today the lady from PH met me here & brought me 2 replacement silkies for the crazy mixed breed psychotic chicken lol & they are precious!!!! I must say she was very kind, very apologetic, & so sweet to me. She brought me a blue & a splash & they are beautiful & my older ones are being so kind & loving towards these little ones which just thrills me to pieces! I will post pictures tomorrow of our little newbies

Believer01~ I hope it is something very simply... I'm not familiar with the molting process yet but I am saying an extra prayer that your girl will be a ok!

Pam I will actually be at MTSU Tucker Theater at 7:00 Sunday morning for my little nieces Applause Competition dance. I have been looking forward to this competition for months now. She is very good to be 9 years old. I appreciate the offer though and do hope to see everyone again. Where is this meet up being held? Old Fort and cross our fingers we don't get busted with chicken?

I do hope your chickens get better soon! Wish I could help with the safe guard but I have never used it.

I don't know enough to know, 1HappyFamily. She's eating drinking and acting otherwise normal. Still got the squirts, though. I'm trying not to be a worry wort about these girls, but.....I'm worried!

Hope everyone is feeling better and over the weekends crud. Did anyone get to try some mullein tea?

I hope all you less than perky mid TN folks are gettin' back up to strength.
The sunshine and warmth today was sure nice.
I have just some quick concerns about my inaugural run of my newly made styrofoam hen. I've noticed that people who post that they opened their bator during lockdown were just seriously chastised for doing it... Really? I simulated lockdown with mine and opened it twice a day to wet the sponge in front of the light bulb, and It was back up to 70%-ish within 20 minutes or so. Are you really supposed to not open it at all during hatching? Also, my temps are ranging from 96 to 104, but I find comfort in averaging these to 100. In my theory, this should be the internal temp of the egg. Am I right there? Also, I was worried about hatched chicks rolling pipped chicks face down, so I decided I would hatch in paper egg cartons. My problem with this is my bator is really tiny... I wanted to use what I had, If this one works I'll get a bigger box. But for this time, the temp and RH are staying way to constant to pass on the chance. I took a pic of the trimmed down egg cartons in the bator to get opinions, but keep in mind that this pic represents setting 12 eggs and all 12 making it to lockdown. If only 10 pass candle test then there would only be 10 cups, do Ya'll think this is enough room for the chicks that hatch? Please keep in mind that this pic would be all 12 eggs I would set making it to LD.

I posted for fresh fertile eggs on freecycle and got a nice person from Cumberland Furnace to allow me some eggs that I can come get Sat. morning, so I guess I'll be setting them that evening. She said she should have 6-10 for me. I'm really anxious to see if I get anything out of it, but I hope for some to hatch so I'll feel like I got it right.
The white thermometer is only there for calibration of the digital one that will stay for the duration. It won't be there during incubation or lockdown.
