The Middle Tennessee Thread

Just found out our little chicks are shipping out Wednesday!! Called to see if I could add a chick to our meager order of four (2 barred rocks and 2 buff orpingtons, was going to add another Orpington but too late to add). So we should have the little ones Friday!!!

Going to get brooder all set up tomorrow and staying on the look out for a few Easter Eggers around the same age as my soon to be fuzzy butts!

Whoohoo!! Yay for your chickies!

(I have easter eggers that are a week old and a few that will be hatching in a couple of weeks. They are all black though.

Hmm..I have noticed he's not even looking at the splash wheaten hen now..not sure why when she's one of the prettiest in the pen.Maybe they had a squawk or something between them

I'm moving Calvin out of there and putting in Levi to hatch a few there otherwise I'm pretty much done hatching the big birds this summer. I have 2.5 broodies Lucy has a bunch of mix eggs then one of my MF hens has some and my black laced red wyandotte is thinking seriously about it.
Just sat 24 blue and black bantam cochins but I know several will be clear...I can't bring myself to clip my black hen and with her fluff....going to have to get into AI or sacrifice her beauty all in the name of chicks soon

I just gotta ask ladies - who do you all sell all these chicks to?

I want to thank Tish for helping with the Kids Games Saturday at the Cannon County Good Old Days! She was a blast and made it so much fun for the children

(I think I used the icon that says major congrats! If not, that's what I meant!)

Had a blast with Anne yesterday. I just knew I'd like all you crazy chicken people (hey, that's not what I call you ~ my husband has dubbed us all with that moniker!). I think we should set a date for the next meet-up right now and stick with it so that there's no last minute confusion. We've got so much in common (is that a compliment?) that I want to see more of you all!

So bad news, I think. Someone (I'm guessing my son's nanny) moved my hen off her nest today. I know she can't get back to the regular part of the coop on her own because all the walls/roof are screwed down and 3 latches on the one door out. I sectioned off a place in the coop away from the other hens for her to hatch her babies. Plus, she's been there for 5 days with no problems. I'm not sure how long the eggs were uncovered, but they weren't exactly hot when I put her back on them. She was still broody and sitting on a couple eggs that were laid today by the other hens in their regular nesting boxes. I put the fertilized eggs under her Saturday night.

Any chance they are still viable? When is the earliest I can candle and tell? This is my first time with a broody hen. Thanks!

Hi all.
I made myself a candler today, just a coffee can with a light socket in it, but it worked really well. I'm pleased to say that the 5 tinted eggs that were donated to me have the nice solid blob that it looks like I could expect to have right now, but the real reason behind my post is that I looked at 4 of the lighter colored wal mart organics that I used really for the sole purpose of seeing how the addition of eggs would affect temp/humidity, and 2 of the 4 I candled look like the 5 fertile ones do. Guess I'll leave em all in and give it a good look day 8 which is this upcoming Sunday. Today was my first day to have it running with eggs in it while I was at work. It was a busy day, so I couldn't spend much time thinking about em, but when I finally got home to turn em everything was right where it needed to be. My only concern now is that my schedule won't let me turn enough in a day. If I don't get the results I want I'll definitely rebuild my box and make it big enough to accommodate a turner that I can patch into my wiring I already have.

Pam and I did have a great time! We talked forever!! We certainly missed the rest of you though. So we are thinking that perhaps we should try to do monthly local meetups in Murfreesboro and Lebanon and then a big one every couple of months alternating between the two places. I know we are trying to cover people that live all over and want to make the meet ups as accessible as possible for the majority of people. If we do both Lebanon and Murfreesboro than people can catch the one closest to them. What do y'all think? Who wants to be the point person for Lebanon? I'm guessing I'll be the default point person for Murfreesboro unless someone else wants to do it.
