So I made a post in Incubating and hatching eggs that said I set eggs today, 5-21-11. If any of you wish to follow me, you'll find me there, I don't think this is the right page for me right now. This forum has been outstandingly frustrating, and I'm so tired of feeling like I'm interrupting a conversation every time I'm excited and want to post, and it always feels like the worst time to be happy.

Matlock, we are like a big, loud southern family on here. We all talk at the same time, cheerfully interrupting each other and talking over the top of each other. Don't worry about it. Jump right in. You are not offending anyone and we like hearing what is going on with your new incubator. Lots of us are constant hatchers and we love hearing what everyone else is hatching (and we really love pictures!). Be happy, be sad, be excited... just share what is up. We are listening even if we keep talking.

So here's my off topic question. Do most of you use hardware cloth for your runs as opposed to chicken wire? I'm panning on replacing all my wire with hardware cloth. What size holes work best around here?

CityGirl - Yes, I listened to your message and it definitely made sense. I was thinking the same thing but needed someone with more experience to confirm. At least there's a little hope. I was so frustrated when I went to check on her and she wasn't there. I panicked for a few minutes and was trying to figure out where she could be and then I wen tot he other nests and there she sat. So I immediately grabbed her and put her back in her "condo". I still don't have an answer as to how she got out. Hopefully I can tell something one way or the other by Saturday night with the eggs. It's going to be hard waiting that long so I may take a peek before then if I'm brave enough to do battle with her. Thank you so much for returning my call!

Matlock - Please do share more! I saw your post but was so caught up in my current crisis I didn't post. I'm hoping to take a few pics here in the next couple of days and post. I have to admit I'm very interested in your store bought eggs and whether they were fertilized. Interesting.

Tracy - I used hardware cloth and believe it is 1/2". It was very easy to install. I used the big staples similar to what you would use to attach fencing on wooden posts. I haven't had any problems with predators getting in. Big, fat, nasty possums are the most dangerous threat around my place.

Tracy, I have 1/2" hardware cloth on the bottom and chickenwire on top. So far it has worked out fine. We have lots of possums as well. We also have coyotes, but so far they haven't gotten bold enough to come up to the coop. I would love to do the whole thing in hardware cloth. It's just really expensive.

I put mine up with a pneumatic staple gun. Works great and really saves your hand.

Citygirl - love the idea of meeting once a month. Mboro is just a hop, skip and a slide from us so I can help anytime you need it. Maybe the boro and lebanon meets could be on diff. weekends, that way if someone can't make it to one then there's always another one. Dunno. But I will definately, probably, maybe make it to the next one. I want to pick believer01's brain on natural remedies.

Two of my boys have been up since 4:45 this morning. Playing.

And it's not even summer break yet.

Oh, I think I have a broody hen. My little cochin Daisy sat on her egg for who knows how long yesterday before I found it then she confiscated one of the orp's egg. What can I do to prevent this? Will just gathering the eggs as soon as possible do the trick?

Matlock, please don't let us chase you away! I don't respond to your posts b/c I don't know anything about incubating and such!

But 'listening' to you all discuss your baters, and lockdown, and hatchings is interesting and I'm learning for when I try it. I've posted stuff here that should have gone elsewhere, but wan't the opinion of folks I knew and no one seemed to mind.

And Troyerchicks - if you're looking for info on helping those young'un's sleep in, here's a quick list.......no sugar in the evenings and that includes fruit juices (even natural sugars can blow into your system and hype you up if your sensitive). And no dairy products, especially cheese/ice cream....store bought milk has so many problems, I'll just list a few.......tons of hormones which mess up a persons endocrine system big time and that includes the thyroid which regulates sleep, plus once its been processed milk contains large amounts of a type of sugar called lactose without the other components to be properly absorbed.

Gluten in grains (think, bread, pastries, pasta) adversely affects many and the fluoride in tap water does really funky things to our brains, especially the little growing ones!
