The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

I put up clear plastic around the North end, NW & NE side half was down the length of the aviary to block the cold winds . We have to many very warm winter days to completely enclose in plastic

I got my Mandarins and my Wood ducks today! I'm so excited! Unfortunately we had a really bad storm last night that took out our pens. My husband is outside working on them as quickly as he can. In the meantime the ducks are in our spare bathroom!!!

So Sorry about your pens.

Hope your ducks look better than the ones I got today. The Poor Mandy hen was pouring blood out her toe. Looks like her toe nails got cut off. How would that happen inside the shipping box. had blood all over me. She got away from me and hit the pool. 1 of the Cinnamon Teal had gobs and gobs of poop dried in it's feathers. They are the dirtiest stinkiest bird I have ever gotten. Looks like they haven't seen a pool in awhile. I e-mailed the sender and told her exactly how I felt. They have been trying to call me to discuss it. Hey what's to discuss. You don't give proper care to your birds and me buying them will probably save their lives

N. pintails, just leave them out in it, they love it. Outside of a few teal and the treeducks, most all non tropical species do fine in any winter condition, they are built for it, no need to worry about them, though a little wind shelter is always appreciated

ROFL!!! My husband opened the boxes and said, "WTH?" The Mandarins are very young so no color to the male at all. I think he was expecting to see a full blown in color male. LOL The Woodie is prettier and a little bit older. His head is soo pretty and of course I took the opportunity to hold them while I could. hehehehehe.

Where did you get your ducks from?? I would have been up in arms! Being involved in parrots for so many years, I have a soft spot for "feathers"...all kinds. People that abuse or neglect birds (or any animal), I have no use for.

I got mine from Indiana. These birds are in perfect feather. A little feather damage from being in the box but you can tell its from being in the box and not from neglect. You can tell that these birds are the ages that the seller told me they were as well. As I stated before. this is my first venture into Ornamentals/Migratory birds but I've been around and raising enough birds in my life that I can tell alot from feather condition and look of a bird by looking at it and handling it.

I guess that's one of the good thing about me raising parrots since I was 17.

Hopefully their pens will be done tomorrow so I can get them OUT of my spare bathroom and outside where they belong. I'm sure they'll be happy and I KNOW that I'll be happier. LOL

so did mine Tennessee. Probably the same auction. I can't believe there would be that much difference in the condition of our birds. Mine were Pure D Nasty, Stinky, and looked like they had not seen a pool in a while. After the Teal came out of the pool they looked like a wet dog. They had no water repellent to their feather at all
