The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

I finally got the rest of my nest boxes in today. they look pretty sweet and were dirt cheep. I made them out of 4 gallon buckets, and the fronts have bark on them and makes it look really cool.

I used flower pots for my ground nest, plastic garbage can on its side with a whole cut out in the lid, rubbermaid storage containers with a hole cut on 1 end, they also like the Booda covered Catlitter box I found used/cheap and the top side hole catlitter box laying on it's side. My chickens fight over who gets to nest in the litter boxes i have in with them. I wasted my money buy chicken nesting boxes. I only have a few of the wood duck boxes out so far but have the ground boxes out

not the normal one most people have. These have opening low to the ground but the Boodas are very expensive so you have to shop around probably for used ones like I did. The top side whole one are about the same price as the regular covered litter boxes most people use.
Here is the booda. I have several of the regular ones and 1 of the staired ones. My Fulvous like it

Here is the top hole box. You just lay it on its side

I just saw some of the ideas for ground boxes and I might have to try that.. We have our raised wood duck style boxes up but I haven't put anything in the bottom of them yet because I don't want any eggs this early... Though my Manadarins, Wood Duck and Ring Teal have really been checking them out...

I only have maybe 3 or four ground boxes out and I need to get busy.. We are getting the wood the last weekend in January and will be building the next weekend, hopefully with the help of our boy scout troops.

My Buffleheads, Hawiians and several others have started mating and I am just waiting on the first eggs!!

One question.. where can I find information about why the Mandarins and Wood Ducks can't succefully breed.. Just wondering because I have noticed that two of my birds have bonded and it would be a pretty pair of birds... mandarin Drake and a Silver wood Duck Hen..

it doesn't say they can't but that there has never been a known proven occurance of it happening and that no mandarin/wood duck hybrid has been reported or photographed. If it does happen the powers that be want to see pics and any info you have on it

I had it happen for 2 yrs with a female manderin and male wood duck but never a fertile egg. But last year seperated them and both were fertile with their same species pardner so that part was'nt the problem. I will watch closely this year on my white woodies and manderin but if I see a "wrong" pairing I'm putting one pair in a different pen so both pairs will have babies. So if you ask me if they can breed and be fertile my opinion is no way. And I'm definitely not the first person to witness this firsthand with both birds oviously being 1oo% fertile. And she really dug him too and no one else.
