The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

Shipping is alway difficult to guess. Depending on where you live and the distance the shipper needs to travel to ship the birds. In MN we went from no surcharge to a $1.00 per pound for a few years. This fee did not show up on the USPS shipping label because it was the airline that was charging this fee. This fall it has gone to .20 per pound and still does not show up on the slip. I try to tell my customers if I guess within $5.00 I will not fefund the difference, if over that I we refund the difference.

Hottentot can you believe I traded 5 big fat 1 yr old Black Copper Marans hens I hatched and $50 for a pr of spring 2010 hatch Hottentots woo hoo!!! That's how bad the guy wanted my Marans. Hubby only had to drive me 1 hr to get them

MNwaterfowler why would she want to charge me 105 and Tenn. only 75.00 for 2 pr of ducks?? my actual shipping was a little cheaper then hers too

I know that when I delivered parrots to people's homes, (I would deliver within a 10 hour radius of my home), I would charge by the mile, so I understand that. People also didn't mind if they were paying $1000 for a parrot, my $50 charge (sometimes more, sometimes less) to deliver, was nothing to them. But they would rather I deliver than ship and I like to travel and meet my parrots parents so I often did it.

I'll be shipping goslings in the spring, hopefully.

Im looking into getting some Ornamental ducks such as Bahama Pintails or Mandarins. I have a female Khaki Campbell and I was told that i shouldnt put ornamental in with domestic....may I ask why? I am new to ducks sooooo

I prefer to have my birds shipped Delta Dash/ Cargo. They are dropped off that morning and arrive within 6 hours at the airport. It's not that much more expensive then sending it by the post office but you know when you are getting them.

Domestic duck for the most part a 3 to 5 x's bigger in size and weight. You can get one for 3 dollars at a hatchery or feed store. If you find a Mandarin for than 25 dollar you are doing great. Would you want to risk a 25 dollar duck for a 3 dollar one??

I didn't know that Karen

Exoticducklovr,
I cannot answer as to why she would charge you 105.00. There are to many factors. If she needed to get a health certificate to ship into your state that would have run $35.00 minimum, you should have received a copy of this as well. I would suggest calling her & asking her why. I just know what has worked for me & my customers and seems to work well. I also request of my customer if I am short by more than $5.00 to pay the difference as well, but I have yet to get the extra I was short. So with that being said I try to get & close as possible & send them payment for the overcharge if it's more than $5.00.

On this thread page 8 post #78 i believe covers it.

Okay, but it kinda didnt answer my question. I see it is bad if you have a male in there, or when they are growing up, but y can 3 grown ducks 2 ornamental and 1 domestic females be together if they are adults?

because domestics are bullies, they will run, chase and eventually starve them to death, regardless of sex. Same with ducklings, worse with males, males will also mix breed anything you have, or at best prevent the correct males from breeding. Domestics of any breed or sex or age are no no 's when mixing in a waterfowl collection with migratorys. They are also much nastier, and can cause more disease problems in your pens. The domestics are for the most part immune to it from centuries of captive dirty pens, where as migratorys, while tuff little buggers, are not naturally use to be in less than pristine conditions.
