Wow, My girls made it finally. Is it normal for your hens to change color slightly after a molt? My Bared Rock/Buff hen is much darker this time and my EE is much lighter. Wow, they are pretty now and I finally got eggs this morning. It was sad as we have 8 hens and had to buy eggs for thanksgiving. lol!!

Yes, it is normal and even said some breeds won't get their full color until after they molt.

One way to keep eggs stocked is to add a couple new girls every year that won't be molting.

Aside from that... you could plan ahead and keep some eggs on reserve. Unwashed in the fridge I have had eggs last 6+ months and STILL be better than store bought! Some people crack them into ice cube trays to freeze and then into a plastic bag and use regularly as needed.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Hen at the bottom is Rosemary and she was the color of her neck pre-molt.

I'm right there with you, sad empty egg bowl. Did get a suprise egg from my girl that's still in the worst molt this morning. I'm glad to have it but I've got girls that are nearly normal now not laying, so my patchy no tail Delaware has really upped her position on my favoriates list.:)
I wish my molt was over, I'm down to 1 egg! At least I calculated correctly so I could make Thanksgiving dinner. (And yes I was "saving up" eggs this fall in anticipation of molt, but clearly not enough.)
