Hey folks, can I join this thread? I had never even heard of the MaxiCoopX incubator until a couple of days ago. I am convinced now that I need one after reading through much of this thread. I was watching a new in box one on Ebay and the seller sent me an offer, I countered just a smidge because the shipping is UPS and a bit more expensive, waiting to hear from him/her.
I've hatched a lot in my Hovabator, first the original, and now, my Genesis preset. I have some very expensive hatching eggs coming next week from a great breeder of ultra high quality Barred Plymouth Rocks (Jamie Duckworth) and I really don't want to mess this up. They're coming from about four hours away in the next state so not far. I've usually had pretty good luck with shipped eggs over the past 20 years, but needless to say, I'm nervous. I really want these to hatch! Fertility is good because Jamie did two test hatches, 18 out of 20 eggs successfully escaped from their shells so if it doesn't go as well as I hope, I don't want it to be the fault of the incubator! Shipping is gamble enough so I'd like to do this one in the Maticoop.
The Genesis humidity reads about 8-10% low from what it actually is (calibrated an analog hygro to verify, again) and I think the temp is okay, but every thermo/hygro I put in there to test it always reads 2* lower than the preset 100* on the bator. I still think the Genesis temp is prob very accurate, not the thermometers I put in there, cheapies. I hope I can get the MaxiCoop 30 set up, tested and maybe hatch in that one. i'm going back to the one breed I love the most, not keeping others after this, will hatch from them and don't plan to do more shipped eggs if this goes well enough.
All that preamble is to ask how folks have done with shipped eggs in that particular incubator. The last time I incubated was almost 9 years ago with some great quality BRs and Partridge/Blue Partridge Brahmas, both types have been relatively broody so I never needed to use anything except broodies to hatch. A few from those hatches are still around, everything seems to live to the age of Methusalah here, LOL.
I have always held the humidity to between 35 and 45 the first 18 days, as I recall. I am in the N. GA mountains at 2000 ft elevation so not as humid as it is a couple hours south of me, if that helps with suggestions. Thanks, all. ~Cynthia
