The Moonshiner's Chick Chat

It was my hope to finally hatch some splash BCs this Spring. I got nothing but blue BCs now so it’s got to happen eventually. One problem… my hens aren’t laying at all. They quit laying late last summer. 2 of them are last year’s chicks that would be about a year old right now. Doesn’t make sense. I need chook to bring me some splash birds to take the pressure off.

Idk what I'm gonna work on yet. Need to inventory and make some decisions. Then get some pens set up.
The boy has always been into the chickens and especially the chicks but he's not been a fanatic just more like a normal person about them.
I was almost out of the cuckoos and he really liked them so we started a small group to work on cuckoo and blue cuckoo with those being his project.
I've been working on the blue duckwings and hatched a couple splash duckwings last year. I told him they were the first I've hatched so that equated to them being the first known to man blah blah blah.
The other day he asked when we were getting back to hatching. Seems this year he's more into all of it then before. He talked about getting back to his cuckoo project then popped out about the splash duckwings and where I was with them.
I was surprised he remembered them and their actual color name. This season may be really fun and more focused on what he wants to do. Let the little guy have the power and I'll play support. See where it goes.
I'm gonna run the Pepsi bator but probably at half capacity at most. I'd like to get 22 hatches out of it this season. That would get me to the 100th hatch from it.

I think your BC’s are just taking a bit longer to start laying eggs…Usually it can be anywhere between 5-12 months for pullets but seeing how it’s getting warmer already I would guess that they should be starting sometime soon.

Ya I know someone with just one BC. Said she wasn't laying yet either but her shanks have really turned super bright yellow in the last week or so so she's figuring it's about to start happening soon.
My leghorns are far from full on laying right now too. Shouldn't be much longer though. Egg numbers have been increasing.

…Is it Rona?

Same thing here with my Orps except I haven’t seen or gotten any eggs from them at all since mid-November I think it was. My pullets should be starting soon but as of lately, regardless of oyster shells and sunshine I got nothing 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s not like I’m waiting for their first eggs. They started laying in the summer and just quit. By February, down here, even the cows are laying eggs!

My bees died. They were a small colony to begin with, but I believe they would have survived had I not made a gross rookie mistake. They needed every chance they could get to make it and I robbed them of one key chance that broke the chain of fresh brood. I’m putting swarm traps out tomorrow and will hopefully start the process over.

Yes, I still have RIRs. They are doing well and laying like champs!
