To me it's just a made up name for something that's not Mille Fleur.....

I was thinking about getting back into them myself for parades and such.
Their little fluffy fat @sses would be perfect for shooting out of oversized potato guns into the crowds.

This! Exactly this! I think they call them calico because they resemble a calico cat (tri-colored essentially). But you're absolutely right. Someone decided to make Mille Fleur Cochins and Polish, and whatever else and never invested the time, energy, and effort into getting them clean, polished, and presentable. They bred three or four generations and decided that was good enough. And then called them calico, because even woodsy, hill-folk, from the Deep South know "them don't look like them there fancy chikens, them Millie Floors."

This! Exactly this! I think they call them calico because they resemble a calico cat (tri-colored essentially). But you're absolutely right. Someone decided to make Mille Fleur Cochins and Polish, and whatever else and never invested the time, energy, and effort into getting them clean, polished, and presentable. Yes I understand that but ..... every single one of them is different..... different amount of Black, brown, tan, white, different amounts of mottling etc.... everyone's interpretation of what "calico" is is different.....

..... doesn't bode well to be called a "color"

Calico patterns definitely do make a colorful birds. There more for new people that want a colorful pet.
