We had a DQ'd Silkie. It was a "satin" Silkie

We had two dating. They weren't DQd from what I saw on the notes

Crooked keel is only a severe defect for most breeds (Cornish, Asil, Turkeys ect being disqualifications) but there’s still no reason to bring them.
There was a crooked keeled bird at the last fair I judged, but I dqed him because of his bow legs. It seems if they’re a little deformed they’re a lot deformed.
One of our Ancona cockerels had a crooked keel this year. Sadly he was still to young to be worth eating.
The superintendent at that fair works for Hyline and he said the high production layers produce so much and draw so much calcium from their bones that the bones deossify and get so soft that they bend into weird shapes, crooked keels being extremely common. Gross, but a little fascinating.

Crooked keel was a DQ, I think it was a blue Langshan. Blue something like that

I dqed so many birds for mites…
The superintendent was actually kinda grateful though because judges in the past let it slide and even though he told kids to take care of the mite problem they wouldn’t. He was a nice guy.

Not sure about state fair, but my fair wouldn't allow birdsnwith mites to enter. You could take the bird home and wash them and bring them back (as long as it was still before the deadline), but bugs equalled no cage

Was the same when I used to show mice. Any with mites were immediately made to leave the premises.

Speaking of Buffs, gorgeous geese @ColtHandorf !! I really want Buffs, but my daughter wants Africans, then someone showed me there are actually Buff Africans, I'd just have to win the lottery.

Thank you! The American Buffs are gorgeous. They come in Blue and Lavender as well.

Holderreads has them, but it looks like they only sell the top show category as chicks and I don't know if you can specify buffs

Holderreads is pretty much closed to the public, and I believe they only sell adult birds now. They are no longer offering goslings.

There's a show breeder near me that wants $75 a gosling, AND quotes the local law that you have to buy 6 or more baby poultry at a time ... not that that pertains to breeder sales, that's for re-sellers like TSC and such. They're gorgeous, but I don't want a flock of them! And that is big chunk of change!

Isn't Holderread's retired and out of business? Such a shame they had no one to pass it on to, I had REALLY wanted some of their Welsh Harlequins and I'd have given up on buff anything for a pair of their Lavender Ice geese, but I never had both the space and the $$$ at the same time, and by the time I did it was too late.

Does anyone here know anyone in/near NYC? I'm trying to find a home for some chicks.

I know! I wanted some from them so bad. I have a friend on here that has some, and she wants to rehome the entire flock to my house, but the only way to get them is to drive, and a flock of like 16 geese aren't going to fit in my Hyundai Sante Fe.

They have caramel colored bills. Can any other breed of poultry claim to have a caramel beak?

One or both of my buff BC girls are molting. There’s buff feathers all over the run. Seems a bit early. Anyone else experiencing an early feather storm?

Yes!! It looks like I ran over about 12 feather pillows with the lawn mower. All of the birds are molting and basically not laying.

Oh, they are cute!

Our state fair champions deserved it. But there were birds that shouldn't have ever been there. One was wry tailed very obviously, one had a crooked breast and two had no feathers on their heads. They had been plucked bald. Obviously two were DQ'd and the other two placed last, but still. There was no reason to even bring them

Sometimes shows really just want a lot of entries. (Like BYC contests) Even if they aren't good. I know when I showed with the NFSS (National Finch and Softbill Society) we'd basically bring anything that was remotely showable to fill the benches because it showed us supporting the show (every entry had a fee) and even if a bird wasn't in perfect feather, it allowed people to see species they might not have seen otherwise.
