The Moonshiner's Leghorns Battle Edition

Some one left a garden hose in my swimming pool, it was along the top of the water. One of my full size adult hens fell in the pool and was able to stand on the hose (for hours). She was wet and angry, but she is fine and doing her chicken thing. She would have drowned if not for the hose.

I must just be missing something. It would be too slick to walk up without adding ridges

<said in the kindest tone> You're missing the part where wood quickly swells and gets nicely grippy. One end sticking out of the trough and your problem is solved. If you use a branch, try to get one with bark on it if you're concerned about grippiness, but I've not had birds, domestic or wild, drown in a tank if you rig up the simplest thing they can grab on to.
