The Moonshiner's Leghorns

I went ahead and put the next set of eggs into the hatchers today. It is a day early but I try to stop turning shipped eggs a day or so early. These are the second set of shipped Brown Leghorn eggs from Don Schrider and some of our Game eggs that were all in the same group. In the NR 360 I will put the Legbar x Brown Leghorn eggs.

I tried to get away with using only one hatcher but I had to turn the NR 360 back on since I didn’t want to dig the other Genesis right back out of the closet. Since we are nearing the end of our hatching season I have been trying to put some of the incubators away.

However, I have to separate several different breeds and the eggs from Don Schrider are from like 4 different pens so I want to keep all of those separated. My husband is picking me up a roll of shelf liner for the NR 360.

Pardon how dirty the mesh bags look, I haven’t gotten a chance to wash them in between the last couple of hatches. I line them with clean paper towels. But this is how I separate breeds/varieties in the hatchers. And you can see the Cool Whip bowl I use for water. I raise it up on another bowl so chicks can’t accidentally get into it. Pretty Redneck, but it works well. I won’t add water or the sponge until tomorrow evening when true lockdown is to start.

The 4 Brown Leghorns from Don are doing good. I think I have 3 pullets and a rooster. I didn’t catch them all to photograph, just 2. All 3 of the pullets look the same.

@Amer the Brown Leghorns from Don look to be free from shafting so far. I am relieved to have some nice birds free from shafting from a good line to work with. They will be important foundation birds both pure and in the Crele Leghorn and Silver Duckwing Leghorn project lines. 🥰
