The Moonshiner's Leghorns

I somewhat have to deal with local too but surely not to the extent you do. My issues is more I'm limited to what I can afford or willing to spend because of the amount I use.
I do know all the sources and options around here though. As far as I know nothing here is medicated except chick feed and it's hard to find that isn't medicated.
I'm really limited to the chick feed I get because all other options increase drastically (for me) in $$$.
Layer feed has lot more options. Everyplace has pellets or crumbles and farm stores have many different brands. I get most of my feed from a mill and they have a few different protein levels available too.
I'm guessing we have it easier over here then you all do.
Yeah I'm on an island, not mainland UK, so if it isn't available from one of the two main feed suppliers I'm aware of I'd need to order online and pay an eye watering delivery surcharge.

I suspect the chick feed sold here is unmedicated because it tends to be hobbyist keepers with smaller flocks who are raising chicks, and people running a large flock of layers will just buy point of lay pullets.

How is buying chickens there? Are you limited on what you can get or do mainland UK chicks/chickens easily make it over?
For hybrid layers you can get in on a big group order every few months - they come up in a truck and then you collect yours from a farm or farm shop. For anything else you need to either buy locally, arrange a courier or bring them up yourself.

I did a 310 mile / 27½ hour round trip by boat and bus last month, to collect two pullets in exchange for a couple of cockerels a breeder wanted :lau

Sending chicks by post isn't allowed here.

Ya idk what the correct term technically should be either but I know she wasn't around back then and when you said autosexing she probably immediately thought autosexing like Legbars etc.
Don't want to assume too much but rather cool that it read like you all were on two different pages and not on agreement but there wasn't no ugliness. Moony thread people are good people for sure. That's cool to not be like other threads out there.
It's because we are all friends here, I consider you all friends. I love learning new things, especially when it comes to chickens or genetics, so if I can discuss and learn something new that is my jam. 🫶

Had to run and get chick feed this morning. Had me thinking about the mention of protein %s.
I feed my day olds to 2 week olds game bird chick feed because it's higher protein and never medicated.
After that they get regular chick feed until spring when they're grown. It's 22%. That good or? What do you all aim for % wise?
Since we typically brood turkeys and chicks, we usually just feed everything gamebird starter to make it easier on us. It is 28%. The chicks grow very well on it and we haven't noticed any ill effects. They also feather pick less on it in the brooders. But for chicks, typically 20-24% is sufficient. Broiler feed is 24% and we have fed that in a pinch if the feed store was out of gamebird starter or chick starter.

I finally moved the chick's out of the brooder yesterday. They are now out there in the growout pen learning how to become chickens, more or less. I can clean out the brooder good, now that it's empty. The incubators are empty and put away too, until later.

Since the general topic right now seems to be about feed, I have been feeding my chicks the Purina18% start and grow from tractor supply.

Had the day off and it made it to mid to upper 50s so tried to get some stuff done today. Made a chick feed run and got 20 bags so way more then I had freezer space for since I already got all that layer feed during that sale. Once upon a time before I started getting freezers I used coolers. Still have quite a few including to good sized ones that hold about 125 to 150 lbs. Once I fed all the juveniles I filled one freezer and 4 coolers. :wee
Had to run a couple errands in town and passed a garage sale where I saw some chicken wire laying out. Of course I turned around and went back. No other chicken stuff and there was a few rolls of beat up 2" stuff I wasn't interested in but I scored a 1" 48" x 25' roll still in plastic and looking like new for $5. Ya I didn't need it necessarily but :wee
What I might of scored that may come in handy was a pile of plexiglass in broke up frames. Wood didn't look too old but I think it was pretty flimsy to start with and then they busted it up disassembling it. 3- 4' x 8' pcs and 2- 4' x 4' pieces. They looked dirty but in good shape. Looks like they may still have the film on it. Idk that's now dusty they were. As I was looking at it the lady said it was a homemade greenhouse at one time. Guess I didn't look that impressed because she said I could just have it if I wanted to drag it off. If it's brittle I'm thinking reframe it and use it on the two ends of that pen. I have a sheet of tin across the bottom and wood at top since the roof is sloped. It's 8' deep and 4' may fill the space if not ill add a bit extra wood to the top. That should keep wind, rain and snow out but won't stop sunlight. That might be ideal
Thought I had all my waterers, bowls etc. that aren't in use done washed but found two more rubber bowls. Apparently I sometimes use them to carry screws, staples etc. then leave them setting somewhere random. Also note to self... watch marketplace for industrial dishwashers. I'm tired of washing stuff.
Brooders not in use almost done. Got one wooden one left to do and 2 of the tubs almost done. Gonna give them one more quick scrub then flip them over on their stand for the winter.
Worked on the other pen today. Couple more repairs and it'll be ready besides I decided to shovel it out. Has a lot of loss dirt as the floor. When I had breeders in it it was so bad they were kicking dirt into feed and water bowls. I didn't realize till I got going that it's about 8" of loose dirt before I hit anything solid. Ever get a bright idea of doing something then figure out it's a lot like work? Ya. But ya I got quite a bit accomplished today. About 6 or 7 solid hours of chickening stuff.

Do any of yall recommend a good metal detector? That is what my little junk digger son is wanting for Christmas. He is growing tired of looking for old bottles and now wants to advance to the good junk. Like finding old washers and screws and stuff. 😆

He'll find some coins too probably. It's kinda like that time he wanted to make money over the summer mowing grass, so I got stuck buying him a $400 mower so he could mow my neighbor's grass for $10.
