Okay good! I sure didn't want people to think I was weird.Nope.
Not so much "autosexing " as you're thinking but more of sexing by slight differences in pattern and breeding to maintain it.In order to produce autosexing birds, you must use the silver or barring gene, and RIR don't have either of those. Sorry, my friend. In theory it is a great idea because I hate growing out birds to end up with a bunch of roosters.
That article you turned me on to a few years ago used the term and I ran with it. I don’t know or understand any of the science behind it.Not so much "autosexing " as you're thinking but more of sexing by slight differences in pattern and breeding to maintain it.
Sorta kind of like some sex Welsummers by slight differences. But he's using other hints.
Ya idk what the correct term technically should be either but I know she wasn't around back then and when you said autosexing she probably immediately thought autosexing like Legbars etc. That article you turned me on to a few years ago used the term and I ran with it. Interesting to read that because in the UK I've found it hard to find turkey or game bird feed that isn't medicated (though I'm limited by what's available locally, due to my location).Had to run and get chick feed this morning. Had me thinking about the mention of protein %s.
I feed my day olds to 2 week olds game bird chick feed because it's higher protein and never medicated.
After that they get regular chick feed until spring when they're grown. It's 22%. That good or? What do you all aim for % wise?
I somewhat have to deal with local too but surely not to the extent you do. My issues is more I'm limited to what I can afford or willing to spend because of the amount I use.Interesting to read that because in the UK I've found it hard to find turkey or game bird feed that isn't medicated (though I'm limited by what's available locally, due to my location).
Protein content in chicken feed is generally lower here than the US. The chick crumb I buy is unmedicated and 17.5% protein. Growers pellets are 16.9% (different brand). I could actually get layers pellets at 18% (different brand again) for the ones that are laying but when I bought a bag recently due to grower being out of stock, none of them would eat it.
