I don't like shooting free roaming dogs, but I also don't like free roaming dogs killing my chickens either. In my state, a livestock owner has the legal right to protect their animals. We usually let the dog go with a warning first, especially if it is a neighbor's dog. Then we let the neighbor know if the dog comes back and kills another chicken, we will shoot it. So, they are warned. Usually that does the trick. If people don't want their dogs harmed, they need to keep them put up and not let them roam. If my Doodle went down the road and killed livestock, I would not blame someone for shooting him.
