The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Not gonna mess with nonsense this season but I AM thinking......

If there's any interest in Moony's choice variety packs.

Oh dear. You only doing variety packs? Or is there a possibility of getting in some special requests on some more "common" colors, like Silver?
Oh yeah, I'll definitely be stocked up with my 7 males and 1 female that Colt insists is statistically guaranteed at the minimum
You are.

Or rather I asked him how many buff he had. He was going to ship a few out. Then he came to the conclusion that yes - he needs to keep those.
Good thing you're the inventory manager. And the sales manager. Are you payroll and HR too?

I need another big incubator.
You'll have to run that by the purchasing manager, yes?
Found two more. That brings nesting count to possibly 10?View attachment 3490983
Do you just not collect your eggs? lol I have one broody Araucana that started on a ceramic egg. lol
I was hoping someone would have a stab at what it may be.

Blue Cuckoo?
Looks like Blue Cuckoo to me? Or it might be stress barring in the feathers. I've hatched Blue Orpingtons in the summer that would have lines like that until they molted.
Oh did I mention these girls have started laying!

Eggs all winter :wee 20230501_081639.jpg

Good lord. And that's not even all the varieties you're working with. What isn't available in the assortment?
Had a major set back with my lavender Duckwing group.
Came out day before yesterday to find their latch unlocked and everyone escaped.
Rounded up the girls but since they spent the night running a mock with unsavory males. Probably mostly with that Chook rooster now I can't use them for 6 weeks.
Never found the rooster. Figuring he probably wasn't fond of being turned loose in general population that he was probably hiding somewhere.
Decided I needed to track him down so yesterday I was forming a search party when I saw something that put it on hold.
Lost a blue hen. Classic raccoon attack. Pulled half through the wire and dismantled.
Rounded up my dog proof traps and bait etc. By then it started pouring rain and wasn't letting up. I set three of those traps and my live trap. Found the remains of my lost rooster behind the barn in the fence line.
Anyways.... this morning.......

Love those dog proof traps.
They're a pita to set and it seems it takes a lot of pressure to set them off but man do they work.
Will move and reset everything for tonight. I never trust there's only one when it comes to raccoons.
Ughhh. That is the worst. Do you have a replacement male?
I hear urine is a good predator deterrent.
Just pee on all your birds before you leave. I'm sure that'll keep them safe.
I'm surprised you can catch the Leghorns to pee on them. lol
I've watched Where The Red Fern Grows enough I'd be all about coon hunting with dogs.
That book is so sad. The movie isn't nearly as bad, probably because the quality isn't the greatest, so you don't get as attached to them. But I cried like a baby when I read the book.

Not an option. There are no raccoons living on my property or the properties behind me or either side.
They come from the two properties across the road from me. Also where the coyotes are. Unfortunately neither owners will allow any type of hunting and do none themselves.

It's unfortunate that those neighbors won't allow at the very least, some varmint hunting. That would throw a wrench into the mix here as well. I'm fortunate that all my neighbors are just happy to have me take out a few whenever the opportunity arises.

And we have an overabundance of varmints here too.
I'm sure there's tons of coons but coyotes are bad too and those are noticed a lot. You can hear at least 3 groups during the nights.
The one neighbor did take out a lame coyote once because it was getting pretty bold as it got more hungry. They were losing chickens and cats.
They actually would buy a ton of chickens at auction every now again and they would all be gone in a few months.
I couldn't even get either to let me deer hunt either. I'm gonna assume it has to do with both running cattle on their properties and be worried about cattle and gun play coming in contact.
Both are friendly and we've helped each other out over the years so not a personal thing.

Maybe they just like the idea of living in the middle of wildlife?

@ColtHandorf
Not quoting your Megaosaurus reply....
Just doing variety packs because I'm not looking to sell eggs per say so I'm not set up to. This will just be extras I can't fit in the incubator.
When I set up pens for myself I try to figure out how to get more then one variety from the same pen. More varieties in less pens. I don't have many pens with just one variety. Maybe just the buffs.
I could let eggs go from just a certain pen or two though I guess.
