The Moonshiner's Leghorns

What do you do with all of your birds?
Use them to make more birds mostly.
Just creating as many varieties as I can.
Just making them more to standard?
I don't care about that as far as getting as close to perfect as possible.
I do care about the standard and want my birds easily recognized as Leghorns but not to the extent of an exhibition breeder.
Been there done that. Over that.
What do you do with all of the cockerels?
Sometimes I give them to someone in need but mostly I take them to auction and sell them as fryers.
I keep a lot of them though. Probably 1 male for every 4 females I keep.

So basically you’re experimenting but don’t want them to look ugly.
 that must be loud as heck!
I actually think I keep that many too. But I only have a few breeds. It’s because there are one or two (close to) quads for each breed on my farm because you might lose a male. Though the only breeders lost this year were ducks. Lots of those. *knock on wood* (LF are too hard for the fox to get, bantams are all locked up. The ducks like to get loose so we lost a lot. So far, since the pens were fortified, none were lost.

Oh yeah I can definitely understand needing more for breeding purposes and stuff but I get annoyed with just one or two constant crowers let alone hundreds 😂🤣

And sorry about your ducks! :hugs

Can confirm. 😇

It's not quite that bad.
Most show breeder's 100% goal is producing birds as close as possible to the standard.
If you're into leghorns you'll soon notice show lines have poor production more often then not.
I do care about breeding quality birds but not to the extent of not caring about anything else.
I love working with colors and patterns but I also watch what makes a leghorn a leghorn.
I want them to look the part. To lay as well as they should. To eat less, etc. etc.
