The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Nice score today. Was getting low on chicken feed. Had to go to town to get the boys some food figured I would stop by their Farm store and get like three bags of feed. That and what I have at home would get me to Wednesday when I had the day off.
I usually never mess with buying any Chick feed from them because it only comes in 40 lb bags and I could usually get it cheaper elsewhere. Today they had a one-day sale. Bonus 10 extra pound bags so 50 lb chick starter $10.99 each. Only had 14 bags in the store but I bought them out. :celebrate

That's a crazy deal!

That's a crazy deal!
Ya I'd of bought 40 bags and made 2 trips if they'd had that many.
I thought I usually got a good deal compared to many when I buy at the mill. Haven't bought Chick feed this year but have asked about price and I think with my frequent flyer discounts it's going to come to something like $15.80 for 50 lb there.
I don't know I kind of lost my mind when I saw $10.99. I was like counting up how many bags they had. Loading 7 on a cart and grabbing an employee telling them I'm going to take these seven but I'm also going to pay for those seven and come back and get them so don't let nobody get any of them. Fun times

Sigh, rain came early. Got the tarp up half way because the pens are joined and it's hard to get one end where I want it. So I chased the babies into the other side. Lol. Ill have to move the entire flock from the compromised pen into the one the silkies was in. Till the rain is done. It's not been a good day.

Ya it rained hard here Saturday and I worked so nothing productive that day. Sunday was light rain but after two long work days I didn't get any extra done that day either. Today after I got 2/3rds of the feed to the barn it started raining. Luckily very light long enough to hurry and get the rest safe inside. Now it's been steady rain ever since. Soaked clothes and 61° isn't ideal but I got some progress.
Cleaned another smallish pen and set a silver duckwing rooster over my better 2 of the 4 splash silver duckwing hens.
Hoping to hopefully get a couple or few decent blue silver duckwing boys to move forward with.
Only have 2 silver duckwing males atm and 1 I'm not fond of. Have 3 barred blue SD boys but unsure if single or double gene barred. Gotta do some test breeding to see. Also gonna rotate through them all. Could get a non barred blue SD from them too but trying to cover my bases.
Gonna pick like the 2 or 3 best blue GD hens to put with a blue GD rooster soon to try to get blue or splash GD boys for next year. ATM I have better blue SD females then blue GD so gonna pick decent ones of both to put a different blue GD male with. Mid season I should figure out if one of the barred blue SD males are single gene. If so I'll separate out the blue SD girls to put with him. If not I'll put them with the trio I set up today.
Have 5 decent brown hens with my chocolate project rooster. Mid season I'll move them and a couple of the best blue GD girls with a blue GD boy.

You all follow all that?
Next will be what exactly to do with the blue, splash and black females. I have blue, black and barred males doing nothing at the moment.

In other news...
Today is lockdown. Candled the 12 eggs in the little incubator this morning and took the turner out. Only one clear and no blood rings so 11 have potential there.
30 eggs in the MaticoopX but I won't candle them and remove the trays until after dark since it's a lot easier than.
With six trays and 30 eggs I want to get through them as quick as possible.
Probably should see about getting my brooder set up soon huh?

I think next time I've got extra money I'm investing in some solor powered electric fence for the coops. One for each coop as they are not that close together.

That's a, we need a brooder ASAP! 😎
I'm usually a day late and a dollar short kind of guy. I still can't believe I'm ahead on chick feed.
I brood in my bedroom for the first week in a large Christmas tree tote. It's clean besides dusty in the garage should be fairly quick and easy to get set up.
Now week 2 and beyond are no where near ready.
I have a habit of not even cleaning brooders and breeding pens at the end of season. I cuss myself every spring for it but it doesn't seem to help. Moony is hardheaded.
Feel free to cuss me at the end of this season. I really need to quit doing that.
