The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Tossed 2 clears from the 30 eggs in the MaticoopX.
No blood rings so everything else went into lockdown. I candle on day 18 for clears and usually blood rings are obvious enough to see. Everything else stays. I don't check for movement or anything like that.
I was surprised out of 42 eggs only 3 were clear. I collected some like a day or two after setting up the pens. Good job boys.
Wow! Your boys could teach mine a thing or two.

Anyone use brooder plates for chicks?
Thinking about it for the the first week when they're in my room.
Need to measure my box and see what size I could go with. Has me curious how many chicks can any certain size work for?
They'll be from 1 to 7 days old only.

I do. I use the ones you can get at TSC. I have one smaller than that as well. The TSC can handle maby 30 to 40 chicks. My little one probably 15 to 18. Bothe will fit the large totes. The TSC one with just enough room for feed and water. My little one gives them room to out from under it.

I used to. I didn't really like them though. I couldn't use them with shipped chicks, I couldn't use them outside in the shed, it was a lot more work changing the height constantly as they grew and they loved to poop on it.

I much preferred just using a heat lamp since I generally had to add those to keep the chicks warm enough anyways with the plates.

I'm seeing like 4 from TSC and of course it's not letting me load the pics here.

My Favorite Chicken
Is it one of those?

Producer's pride is the brand I have from TSC.

Yeah have to take in the fact I'm in south TX so my weather is conducive to useing heat plates. They do like to sit on top and poop on them.

We have one, but Im not crazy about it. I have stopped using it for newborns because I ended up having to use a heat lamp anyway to keep them from getting chilled. You have to use a light anyway so they can see, so we figured might as well use the heat lamp.
