The Moonshiner's Leghorns

He could keep us on topic by posting pictures of his Leghorns and this year's grow outs. 😇
He could but knowing him he'd be more likely to just lock the thread for a bit.
I'll have a talk with him.

I'm gonna start taking some pics soon.
Early season some of my breeder roosters were looking a bit rough. Winter general population seems to be rough on them for looking in their prime.
Most are looking lots better now so I need to take pics before they all go back to pod life.
Hens are the opposite. Molting and breeding has them more rough looking now. I need to start taking pics when the opportunity is best.
When I get through the few roosters I'll get into the grow outs. Most of mine are still younger then yours so you'll probably be getting younger juvenile pics. They're gonna be the same way come very soon with the larger populations. Already seeing some tail feathers disappearing.
My phone camera isn't so great and lighting is tricky but if I ever plan on selling eggs I need to start collecting pics and get enough to have a few decent ones.
Pics are sorta important for ads, right? I know I always look at them and I know they're something I need to improve on. Good pics and taking them.

We have tons of mixes in our free-range layer flock. Hybrids make great, sturdy layers. Pretty much anything crossed on Leghorn is a good layer.
Most are bantam Phoenix crosses so on the small size. I also have to get feed costs down. So that means less chickens altogether. Maybe make room for a leghorn or two. If I was to get any it would be the blue golden or blue silver.

How many are you trying to get down to?
Just curious.
Layer feed has been doing decent here. It's not went up in price and every so often it's on sale or there's some kind of deal store wide that saves a little.
Unfortunately I'll be cutting back on layers to keep youngsters over the winter and chick feed hasn't maintained price and doesn't seem to go on sale any anymore.
Looking for another freezer so when feed does go on sale I can stock up without worry about where to put it.

Trying to get down to 20 to 30. It been a year for things going out in the house and loses of some of my cats that has eaten in to the savings. Wanting to get feed volume down to 300lbs or less. Right now I'm around 500lbs to 600lbs. Lots of roosters gone already and now it will be another 15 to 20 hens. I love my mixes because they are unique but I have plans that they derailed. 🙃

Back to on track Silver Ameraucana, Crested EE and very maybe Blue Silver Ameraucana. Then keeping King my Phoenix rooster, his four girls and the OEGBs and Dutch I have. The Spitzhauben are being rolled into the Crested EE project as its what I got them for.

As feed goes I probably spend to much on a brand I like. I also get all flock and not layer. I spend about 22 to 25 for 40lb to 50lb bags. It's a few dollars cheaper than the purina brand.

Worked on brooders today. Been using 4 that have lids on top. Wood frame with hardware cloth. One piece so gotta be quick and watchful because of course when I lift that lid it's prime escape time. Not a huge deal but still a deal so today when cleaning and moving chicks I chopped the lids of 3 of them into 2 pieces. Added a board and did some stapling. Couple hinges and now I can open half while they all run to the other side.
I'm thinking although it was unplanned project it's gonna make life easier. I left to go but ain't moving those chicks till Friday.
